With the increasing popularity of the radical right, much research has tried to explain the motives of voters. Less attention has been paid to the motives of people to become radical right activists – specifically young people, a group with a high tendency to join right-wing parties. Within the context of the internationalisation of the radical right, this article draws on 28 narrative interviews conducted between 2019 and 2021 with young radical right activists in Poland and Germany, two countries with considerably different political and discursive opportunity structures. We propose to recognise a new motive for becoming involved in political activism: career-oriented individual self-realisation in Germany, as opposed to fulfilling a duty to the nation in Poland. While we identify two different types of radical activism within the different contexts – the (nationalist) anti-establishment populist career type in Germany and the (nationalist) anti-political intellectualism/elitism type in Poland – they both point to the normalisation of the radical right in the two countries.

The political landscape of the radical right has long been a major discussion point in the political and social sciences. By considering the variety of radical right organizations (movement parties and non-parliamentary organizations) and the particular national and transnational political and discursive opportunity structures, the paper aims at a comparative analysis of the main discursive frames present in political programs and manifestoes of radical right social movement organizations and movement parties in Poland (Konfederacja Wolność i Niepodległość and Obóz Narodowo-Radykalny) and Germany (Alternative für Deutschland and Identitäre Bewegung Deutschland). Moreover, based on approaches developed by Cas Mudde and Jens Rydgren, this article analyses how the features presumed essential to the radical right (nativism, authoritarianism and populism) are reflected and interconnected in the official discourses of the selected radical right organizations.

“…Jednostką obserwacji było pojedyncze wydarzenie z udziałem skrajnej prawicy zarejestrowane w prasie codziennej. Początkowe założenia projektu i publikacje (Płatek, Płucienniczak 2017a, 2017b) miały charakter utrwalonego w tego rodzaju tematyce badawczej sposobu doboru danych, ich organizacji i analizy. Następnie, po zaobserwowaniu zmian czasowych w wariancji przemocy stosowanej przez ruch skrajnej prawicy, zaistniała potrzeba zastosowania innego niż agregacyjne (regresja logistyczna) narzędzia, które umożliwiłoby wyjaśnienie, dlaczego w określonym przedziale czasowym skala najcięższych form przemocy stosowanych przez skrajną prawicę istotnie zmalała.…”

Podejście agregacyjne to obecnie dominujący sposób prowadzenia analiz w badaniach nad działaniami zbiorowymi i ruchami społecznymi. W obrębie metod agregacyjnych działania analizuje się jako sumę wartości odrębnych elementów (zmiennych). Artykuł zawiera praktyczną ilustrację technik uzupełnienia agregacyjnych metod badawczych metodami relacyjnymi w socjologii ruchów społecznych. Autor opisuje wyniki badania, którego przedmiotem był ruch skrajnej prawicy w Polsce, w latach 1990-2013. Po zaobserwowaniu zmian czasowych w wariancji przemocy stosowanej przez ruch skrajnej prawicy, zaistniała potrzeba zastosowania bardziej precyzyjnego narzędzia, które umożliwiłoby wyjaśnienie, dlaczego w określonym przedziale czasowym skala przemocy istotnie zmalała. Regresja logistyczna okazała się tylko częściowo pomocna w ustaleniu warunków, w których przemoc ze strony skrajnej prawicy słabnie. Dopiero relacyjne ujęcie pozwoliło uchwycić najważniejsze cechy "przestrzeni" (pola), w jakiej funkcjonuje ruch skrajnej prawicy w Polsce.Słowa kluczowe: ruchy społeczne; teoria pola; analiza sieci Daniel Płatek, Institute of Political Studies, Polish Academy of Sciences Violence of the Extreme Right in Poland. Analysis of the Social Movement Strategic FieldThe aggregative approach is currently a dominant way of conducting analyses on collective actions and social movements. Within aggregative methods, actions are analyzed as a sum of the values of separate elements, or variables. The article offers an empirical illustration of the techniques for complementing aggregative research methods with relational methods in the sociology of social movements. It presents the study on the extreme right movement in Poland covering the period between 1990 and 2013. The findings have indicated the changes in the variance of violence perpetrated by the extreme right movement overtime. They have created a need for a more precise tool capable of explaining why the scale of violence have decreased significantly over a specific period. Relational approach has allowed to capture the most important features of the 'space', or field, in which the extreme right movement in Poland functions.
