“…Sydney specifically acts as drawcard by way of its “reputed and promoted beach culture and night life” (Allon, Anderson, & Bushell, 2008, p. 82) with particular beaches, such as Bondi and Coogee, acting as iconic landmarks with particularly strong imaginative power (Allon, 2004). These areas are also backpacker enclaves that create, for those within them, a suspended state of reality in which positive spatial imaginaries of host societies can be more easily upheld (Wilson et al, 2008; see also Iaquinto, 2020).…”

“…It is not only Australia's tourist bodies, media outlets, and immigration authorities who have presented the country in such favourable terms. Academic literature on British migration to Australia has also upheld these glowing spatial imaginaries by concentrating upon positive, privileged, and “as predicted” experiences (see, for example, Allon, 2004; Schech & Haggis, 2004; Wilson, Richards, & MacDonnell, 2008). Discussions of the experiences of Britons who migrate to Australia only for their privileged positions to be replaced with those of precarity are limited.…”

“…As backpackers often follow similar routes throughout a country, they frequently find themselves inor seek outmeeting places for Western travellers (Howard, 2007;Huxley, 2004;. Indeed, there is now a degree of institutionalisation of backpacker tourism through increased organization, similar travel paths and targeted product development (Ateljevic & Doorne, 2004;Vance, 2004) that contributes to such enclaves and thus often to fewer interactions with the host community (Bushell & Anderson, 2010;Howard, 2007;Wilson, Richards, & MacDonnell, 2008) by functioning as a barrier to authentic local culture (Huxley, 2004). The gap between original motivations and practice, the difficulty of obtaining these desired cultural experiences, is partially filled by the surrogate cultural experiences available in such enclaves through this existing subculture , thus raising the question what role social interactions play within the individual travel experience and for their underlying motivations of self-development and cultural exploration.…”
