The local language extinction is threatening. Since language is one of the culture's elements, the threat is not only for the local language users but also for the nation's culture. This study set out to investigate the factors that contribute to both language extinction and local language maintenance. The researchers employed a descriptive qualitative design with a phenomenology approach; the data were collected from 30 respondents through interviews. To get more data, observation and documentation studies were done. The research revealed that the local Manggarain language might be preserved through families, churches, and schools. Globalization, migration, intermarriage, and language policy also pose a threat to the existence of the local language in question. Thus, for the sake of existence, users should be encouraged to speak the local languages with the help of government policies.

For most EFL students, writing in English is a boring and challenging skill; therefore, creative and attractive media such as bark painting is needed. Bark painting is one of the cultural heritages that has not been valued and recognized by Papuan young people as a culturally important medium. This study aimed at exploring the ways of engaging students to write procedure texts using bark painting and finding the importance of infusing bark painting in teaching procedure text. This descriptive-qualitative study took place in Jayapura, Papua, Indonesia, between January and March 2021. There were students of the Social Science program, 5 Senior High School teachers, 3 tribal chiefs, 3 elders, 3 bark painters, and 2 cultural practitioners involved as the participants. The data were collected by using observation, interview, and FGD (Focus Group Discussion). From the data analysis, the study found that by engaging the students in learning writing procedure text using bark painting, they could effectively and enthusiastically learn the social functions, generic structure, and linguistic features of writing procedure text with a media which is culturally close to them, and they could learn and indirectly disseminate cultural heritage as well as learn the good character of the elders.

This study carefully applies Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) to identify common linguistic patterns to examine English as a Foreign Language (EFL) textbooks. This descriptive qualitative study addresses the ideational, interpersonal, and textual metafunctions of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) textbooks as the research focus. The frequent use of material process, particular nominal group types such as Thing (T) and Numerative Thing (NT), the nuanced modality conveyed by "should," "would," and "will," and the use of narrative perspectives with third-person singular pronouns ("he" and "she") are noteworthy among these patterns. The identified linguistic features furnish invaluable pedagogical insights for the stakeholders of English learners, including the teachers, and provide guidance for targeted language instruction. Furthermore, these results are also invaluable for material development since the study highlights the importance of integrating SFL principles within the classroom discourse. The study also emphasizes the significance of SFL-based textbooks as learning facilitates. The study discovers that SFL-based textbook analysis provides well-informed instruction, allowing teachers to modify their teaching methods to meet students' communicative needs better. Despite limitations, the analysis remains a valuable tool in the classroom discourse as it better portrays the foreign language classroom discourse.
