Characteristic analysis of plasma channel and shock wave in electrohydraulic pulsed discharge

Abstract: Electrohydraulic pulsed discharge has been widely adopted in the industrial field over the decades. The proper description of the plasma channel and the induced shock wave contributes to the development of the technology. Experiments were carried out under different voltages and conductivities. The optical pictures were captured using a high-speed camera. The radii of the plasma channel were calculated using cylindrical approximation and spherical approximation, respectively. The results of the calculation hav… Show more

“…However, at later times, when the discharge channel diameter becomes comparable with the electrode gap, a spherical model is again more appropriate. That is why a two stage description was introduced, at which an earlier cylindrical geometry transforms later on into a spherical one [34,35]. A first attempt to numerically simulate the discharge channel as an expanding ellipsoid was done by Stelmashuk [36].…”

“…e inductance and the capacitance of the plasma channel are ignored because their impedance is much smaller compared to the channel resistance [18,[20][21][22]24]. e total inductance of the circuit is L. e channel resistance is R p .…”

“…Some researchers used to treat R p as a time-varying resistance [12][13][14][15][16][17][18] and others prefer to regard R p as a constant [19][20][21][22][23] during the discharge. It turned out that usage of constant resistance to calculate the channel power, channel energy, and electroacoustic conversion e ciency and to simulate bubble motion together with bubble dynamics model, equation of state of water, and energy conservation equation can bring about accepted results.…”

“…The current amplitude of pulsed spark discharge can reach several hundred amperes, while the current amplitude of pulsed arc discharge is in the kiloampere range [2,3]. With the injection of electric energy, the arc channel is rapidly heated and expanded to form a high-temperature and high-pressure environment, which generates intense ultraviolet radiation and a large number of free radicals, and propagates powerful shock waves outward [4,5]. Compared with streamer discharge and spark discharge, pulsed arc discharge is more widely used in sewage treatment, rock fragmentation, cavitation damage and other fields.…”
