“…A capillary column DB-5ms (60 m × 0.25 mm I.D., 0.25 µm film thickness) was used for the separation of the PCDD/Fs congeners. The temperature program of the gas chromatograph was optimized following the findings of Chen et al (2008): a splitless injection of 1 µl at the initial temperature of 150°C for 1 min was followed by the gradual temperature increase at 25 °C min -1 to 190°C and the final increase at 3 °C min -1 to 280°C, where the sample was kept for 20 min. The mean recoveries of the standards for PCDD/Fs ranged 55-125%, which was within the acceptable range of 25-150%.…”

“…The Nuuk incinerator is an older, small-scale incineration facility, where the technology and operating conditions are quite different from the ones in large-scale Danish incinerators. Lower temperatures and consequent unstable combustion might result in the formation of products of incomplete combustion, which might be precursors for PCDD/PCDF [21]. Electrostatic precipitators represent a low cost technology, but one which might lead to the formation of PCDD/PCDF [22], especially in old MSW incinerators without control of the flue gas treatment temperature.…”

“…Stack gas and residue emissions are the two main ways UP-POPs are released from industries that have major thermal processes. Heterogeneous reactions during thermal processes are the dominant UP-POP formation mechanisms [12], and fly ash is considered to be an important matrix for catalyzing these heterogeneous reactions because it contains relatively large amounts of carbon and catalytic elements [13][14][15][16]. High UP-POPs concentrations have been found in fly ash samples from various thermal industries, so fly ash is considered to be one of the most important sources of UP-POPs to the environment [17].…”
