Characteristics Associated With Sleep Duration, Chronotype, and Social Jet Lag in Adolescents

Abstract: Sleep is a complex behavior with numerous health implications. Identifying socio-demographic and behavioral characteristics of sleep are important for determining those at greatest risk for sleep-related health disparities. In this cross-sectional study, general linear models were used to examine socio-demographic and behavioral characteristics associated with sleep duration, chronotype, and social jet lag in adolescents. One hundred fifteen participants completed Phase I (self-reported sleep measures); 69 of … Show more

“…Studies analyzing functional metabolism and brain neurophysiology demonstrate that neural systems involved in executive functions are affected by the sleep loss, even with partial sleep restriction 19 . One of these conditions of sleep disruption is the social jetlag, one of the most common disturbances in the daily routine 35 . Sleep problems affect cognitive function and may deteriorate the response time, the process of task acquisition and the task execution performance in a short period of time, as well as an increase in the effort in the implementation of the tasks in an efficient way 19 , 36 .…”

“…Norwegian female adolescents with higher waist measurements are more likely to become overweight over time (Bratberg, Nilsen, Holmen, & Vatten, 2007). Although the underlying mechanisms for the association between later midpoints of sleep and higher waist to height ratios are uncertain, later midpoints of sleep have been associated with fewer days of physical activity per week in adolescents (Malone et al, 2015). …”

“…Evening‐type adolescents have reported greater social jet lag (SJL) by delaying their mid‐point of sleep approximately 2 hr from weekdays to weekends (Díaz‐Morales & Escribano, ; Malone et al ., ; Martínez et al ., ; Vollmer et al ., ). Furthermore, SJL has been related to depressive symptoms (Levandovski et al ., ), seasonality (Polugrudov et al ., ), physical aggression (Randler & Vollmer, ), and lower academic performance (Díaz‐Morales & Escribano, ), with the latter study indicating that SJL may also impact on basic cognitive abilities.…”
