Characteristics of a molybdenum X-pinch X-ray source as a probe source for X-ray diffraction studies

Abstract: X-ray emission from a molybdenum X-pinch has been investigated as a potential probe for the high pressure states made in dynamic compression experiments. Studies were performed on a novel 300 kA, 400 ns generator which coupled the load directly to a low inductance capacitor and switch combination. The X-pinch load consisted of 4 crossed molybdenum wires of 13 μm diameter, crossed at an angle of 62°. The load height was 10 mm. An initial x-ray burst generated at the wire crossing point, radiated in the soft x-r… Show more

“…240,241]. X-pinches produce small (µm-scale) high peak power (100 GW) sources that can be used for inline PCI with pulse duration of several tens of ps [242,243]. The generation of sub-ps X-ray bursts from laser-solid interactions is established and has been used to study several physical systems mainly focused on temporal resolution rather than additional techniques like phase contrast imaging [43].…”

“…Сравнительно эффективным средством гене рации рентгеновского излучения являются уста новки с использованием Z и Xпинча [5][6][7]. Эффект сжатия токового канала под действием магнит ного поля, индуцированного сильным током в тонких металлических проволоках, обеспечивает получение высокотемпературной плазмы, излу чающей в полный телесный угол в широком рент геновском диапазоне спектра, при эффективном размере фокуса около 10 мкм.…”

“…A c o mp a r at ive ly e f fe c t ive tool of generating Xrays is the installation using Z and Xpinch [5][6][7]. The effect of compression of the c ur rent channel under t he i n fluence of a m ag net ic field induced by the strong cur rent in the thin metal wires pro duces hightemperature plasma emitting the full solid angle in a wide Xray spectrum with the effective focus size of about 10 µm.…”

“…14 Immediately following the compression, an electron cascade accelerated across the anode-cathode (A-K) gap hits the dense plasma mini-diode, yielding harder (E > 10 keV) bremsstrahlung radiation over multiple nanoseconds (hard hot spot) with a typical source size >50 μm. Spectral features of the radiation produced by an X-pinch include strong emission lines that can be used for x-ray diffraction measurements 15 and smooth broadband continua-due to the intense pressures and densities reached in the hot spot-that can be exploited for absorption spectroscopy. 16 Until recently, high-current pulsed power systems were typically designed around Marx banks (oil-filled reservoirs with capacitors connected by SF 6 -filled switches) and pulse-sharpening transmission lines filled with deionized water.…”
