Preceptors should possess attributes which help them in successfully performing the demanding and challenging role in the preceptorship. This research utilises a qualitative hermeneutic phenomenological approach to explore the attributes of new nurse preceptors. Six preceptors of a teaching hospital in Northwest of Iran who were selected by means of purposive sampling. Data were collected during eight months from July 2014 to March 2015 through in-depth semi-structured personal interviews. Interviews were recorded and transcribed and then were analyzed with the interpretive approach using the Diekelmann's seven-stage method in the MAXQDA10 software environment. Findings included two main themes "feeling proud and honored" and "professionalism" with subthemes including empathy, being nonjudgmental, patience, and spirit of self-sacrifice. The spirit of self-sacrifice was a unique attribute revealed in this research. Preceptors possessed several important attributes which are usually stressed in the literature as selection criteria for preceptors. These attributes could be further drawn upon when selecting new preceptors. Preceptors are role models. Existence of the spirit of self-sacrifice among preceptors could contribute to transferring of such spirit to new nurses and future preceptors as well as to preceptors' patience with challenges of their role. Effective preceptorship needs preceptors who possess specific professional and personal attributes. These attributes could be drawn upon more objectively in the process of selection, preparation and evaluation of preceptors by clinical and educational nursing managers.

Context Athletic training programs are required to incorporate the development of many foundational skills and behaviors into the curriculum. Athletic training students must develop soft skills such as effective communication, exhibiting empathy, dependability, and integrity, which are all associated with quality athletic trainers. Objective To describe a novel approach to promoting the awareness of values and development of the characteristics and soft skills associated with being a successful student and health care professional for students before they enter their clinical experiences. Background Graduate and undergraduate programs typically offer an introductory course to students before their first clinical assignment. The main emphasis of introductory courses is often on learning foundational knowledge and technical skills. However, early adoption of professional values and development of soft skills may benefit students as they start their clinical experiences. Description A course was designed using 11 main themes to guide student learning in values and behaviors important to academics and a career in health care. This article describes how the 11 themes were selected and developed, how the course was delivered, and how various pedagogical strategies were incorporated. Clinical Advantage(s) Development of soft skills may benefit athletic training students as they enter the professional phase of an athletic training program. Conclusion(s) As athletic training education shifts to the master's level, fostering soft skills and necessary preclinical skills for students from varied backgrounds is becoming ever more important so students are all equitably prepared for their first clinical experiences.

Context Education of athletic training students should include the acquisition of soft skills. Evaluation of soft skills is important but challenging. Multisource performance reviews can provide students with feedback from different viewpoints, which can be used to promote self-awareness and encourage reflection. Objective To develop and validate a new multisource soft skills assessment tool for master’s level professional athletic training students. Design Cross-sectional study. Setting Web-based questionnaires. Patients or Other Participants Nineteen participants evaluated the instrument for face and content validity. These participants included 5 athletic training educators, 7 athletic training preceptors, and 7 students currently enrolled in a graduate-level, Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education-accredited athletic training education program. Participants in the first pilot test included 22 students, 22 preceptors, and 3 instructors. Participants in the second pilot test included 28 students, 32 preceptors, and 3 instructors. Data Collection and Analysis A 3-stage process was used to develop and validate the instrument. The process included a literature review and formation of 65 survey items organized into 11 themes. Questions were reviewed by students, preceptors, and instructors. Responses were analyzed using content validity ratio to help identify items needing revision, deletion, or substitution. All open responses were considered. Based on results, 1 question was removed, and 2 questions were updated to improve clarity. The updated Athletic Training Student—Soft Skills Assessment instrument includes 64 questions. In the final stage, reliability analysis was conducted on 2 samples. Internal consistency was examined with Cronbach α and interitem correlations. Results Using a rigorous content validation approach provided evidence that the instrument was comprehensive, clear, and complete enough to establish the tool’s credibility in the preliminary stages. Conclusion(s) The outcome of this study is a multisource soft skills assessment tool that can provide students with formative feedback.
