Characteristics of Microstrip Muscle-Loaded Single-Arm Archimedean Spiral Antennas as Investigated by FDTD Numerical Computations

Abstract: The radiation characteristics and mode of operation of single-arm, groundplane backed, Archimedean spiral antennas are investigated by means of conformal finite difference time domain numerical analysis. It is shown that this antenna type may be categorized as a well-matched, broadband, circularly polarized traveling wave structure that can be fed directly by nonbalanced coaxial networks. The study further concentrates on relevant design and description features parameterized in terms of measures like radiatio… Show more

“…The spiral structure forms a continuously variable diameter antenna that is inherently broadband, improving the device's insensitivity to variations in tissue loading conditions [26,[30][31][32]. Several groups have explored the use of spiral antennae for hyperthermia.…”

“…For this reason, other kinds of devices have to be investigated as, for example, spiral antennas. ese antennas are constituted by two coplanar spirals that unwind with a given are rate [10]. e main characteristic of spiral antennas is a radiated beam, very constant with the frequency, pointing in two opposite directions perpendicular to the spiral plan.…”

“…The Archimedean plane spiral antenna, which is a kind of broadband antenna, has been widely employed in radio system, EM countermeasures, EM compatibility measurement and other fields [5][6][7]. As a receiver, it captures EM fields propagating through space and converts them into voltages and currents in the antenna.…”
