There was a conflicting result of previous studies about the correlation between anxiety and dialysis adequacy. The aim of this study was to evaluate the association of anxiety level with dialysis adequacy and uncover the association of age, leucocyte, and hemoglobin with anxiety and dialysis adequacy in chronic kidney disease patients undergoing hemodialysis during the Covid-19 pandemic. A cross-sectional study was conducted on 139 patients with chronic kidney disease at a hospital in Semarang, Indonesia. The anxiety was measured by Hamilton Rating Scale for Anxiety. Urea reduction rate (URR) was calculated using a standard formula to measure dialysis adequacy. Hemoglobin and leucocyte were analyzed in the laboratory. The Pearson correlation test was used in the study. There was no significant correlation between age, hemoglobin, and leucocyte with anxiety (p>0.005) and dialysis adequacy (P>0.005). There was a significant correlation between anxiety and dialysis adequacy (r= -0.207; p=0.014).

Patients undergoing maintenance hemodialysis (MHD) are a high‐risk group susceptible to SARS‐CoV‐2 infection and long‐COVID syndrome appearance. However, there is limited and unclear evidence for long COVID in MHD patients. We collected the general information, symptoms, signs and laboratory indices of 366 MHD patients infected with COVID‐19 and conducted 12 months follow‐up with a series of questionnaires. As a result, 285 MHD patients had long COVID, with the most common symptoms were fatigue (84.69%) and muscle weakness (72.45%). Mobility problem (p < 0.001), anxiety/depression (p = 0.002) and breathlessness (p < 0.001) were more prevalent in long COVID patients than in non‐long COVID patients. Persistent long COVID people were more likely to report all domains problems of the EQ‐5D‐5L. Age, female, inadequate dialysis (Kt/V < 1.2), coagulation abnormalities (d‐dimer > 1 mg/L) and more comorbidities were risk factors for the development of long COVID. In addition to these factors, elevated inflammatory markers (CRP > 10 mg/L) represent an extra risk factor for the persistence of long COVID symptoms in MHD patients. And more than 80% of long COVID symptoms would resolve after 1 year in MHD patients, of which the sixth month after COVID‐19 infection is a critical turning point. In conclusion, more than 68% of MHD patients have long COVID, which has a poor impact on their health status and quality of life. These risk factors for the development and persistence of long COVID deserve the attention of clinicians.

Background The COVID-19 pandemic posed a challenge to hemodialysis (HD) patients. While most outpatient and elective medical services stopped during lockdown, HD patients continued to visit their dialysis centers. We aimed to assess how the initial phase of the pandemic affected patient care by comparing dialysis adequacy and other parameters of patient care before and during the first 10 months of the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods In a retrospective multi-center observational study, all adult dialysis patients in five dialysis centers in Alexandria, Egypt were included. Dialysis adequacy, missed sessions, laboratory parameters and hospitalization were recorded. Data of the 10 months before and the 10 months after the pandemic were compared and predictors of adequacy were determined. Results In the 388 HD patients included in the study, the number of missed sessions was higher during the pandemic with peaks during the first and second wave of the pandemic. The ratio of patients to nurses, phosphorus and parathormone levels were significantly higher during the pandemic, while urea reduction ratio, Kt/V, hemoglobin, calcium and albumin levels were significantly lower. In patients who reported difficult accessibility, missed HD sessions were higher during lockdown. Hospital admissions doubled during the pandemic, with COVID-19 infection being the main cause (45.5%). Number of patients per nurse and interdialytic weight gain were predictors of inadequate dialysis. Conclusion The COVID-19 pandemic and its related lockdown negatively affected multiple aspects of dialysis patient care. Continued access of optimum care in dialysis patients should be a priority in any future mass events.
