“…Regarding pertussis, prior studies have also revealed a marked age distribution in cases, with the highest incidence among the youngest [ 29 , 30 ]. Although the incidence is not reported in our study, 89.7% of PC visits and 100% of referrals to specialists were recorded in the population < 45 years of age, which serves as an indicator of a greater number of cases in this group.…”

“…The authors recognise that this number is far below the reported and estimated data in other countries, and therefore assume severe underreporting based on the method of collecting surveillance data [41]. In the region of Catalonia, Spain, Crespo et al reported a similar incidence rate of 0.11 per 100,000 person-years for 1997-2010 in people >45 years of age [42]. Sizaire et al analysed the same data as Fernández-Cano [41], as well as additional data for 2010−2012.…”

“…In contrast, few data are available from Latin American, Asian, and African countries compared with Europe and the United States (174,(439)(440)(441)(442)(443)(444)(445)(446). In the United States, reported outbreaks that have been investigated by local and state health departments have affected diverse populations, including school children, military personnel, and hospitalized patients (245,(446)(447)(448)(449)(450)(451)(452)(453). During the past decade, several pertussis outbreaks have been associated with pockets of underimmunization of children (454)(455)(456).…”
