Characteristics of Resistive Fault Current Limiting Elements Using YBCO Superconducting Thin Film With Meander-Shaped Metal Layer

Abstract: The authors have studied resistive-type fault current limiting (FCL) elements which have superconducting thin film deposited on almost whole area of the substrate and a gold layer deposited in the shape of meander on the superconductor. From experiments using YBCO thin film superconductor fabricated by MOD (Metal Organic Deposition) method and FEM analysis, voltage generation at local areas of the FCL element before the S-N transition is compared. FEM analysis with critical current density ( ) distribution in … Show more

“…A nonlinear E-J relation (E: electric field) based on the power law (2) was used for modelling the electromagnetic property of superconductors [8]. Temperature and magnetic flux density dependence of the critical current density JC was expressed by (3) [9,10], where T is the temperature and B is the component of magnetic flux density parallel to the surface of REBCO tape.…”

“…Iin the same period other no less important designs were also proposed by companies like Toshiba in Japan [16]. Then, in the next decade most of the research on SFCL based upon YBCO thin films was mainly dominated by Japan [17]- [20] and Korea [21] by pursuing some novel designs.…”

“…Different topologies for the FCL are introduced in literatures such as superconducting FCLs (SFCLs), solid state FCLs, flux-lock type FCLs and resonance type SFCLs [12][13][14][15][16][17][18][19]. Resonance type FCLs limit the fault current by using various topologies of series or parallel LC resonant circuits [18][19][20][21][22][23].…”
