Gasification of Cynara cardunculus L. was performed in a bubbling fluidized bed (BFB) using air as the gasifying agent and magnesite and olivine as different bed materials. Temperature was varied during the experiments (700-800 ºC) with fixed biomass feeding and air flow rates.The effect of using the magnesite and olivine on the gas and tar composition, carbon and biomass conversion, and cold gas efficiency was investigated. The product gas showed high hydrogen content (13-16 %v/v) for both magnesite and olivine in the temperature range studied.Higher heating value and gas yield were improved with increasing the temperature from 700 to 800 ºC. Biomass and carbon conversion were greater than 75%, giving values higher than 90 % for both 700 and 800 ºC in magnesite and for 800 ºC in olivine. Indane and cresols were the main tar compounds at low temperature while naphthalene was the dominant tar species at the high temperatures. Gasification performance was better with magnesite at 700 ºC while olivine showed better properties at 800 ºC.

This study explored the gasification characteristics of pine sawdust and rice straw with CO2/air in a bench-scale entrained-flow gasifier. The effects of various gasification parameters, i.e., CO2/C, temperature, and biomass type, on the syngas composition, gasification index, and tar yield were investigated. When compared to air gasification, the CO2/air agent for gasification improved the yield of CO, and it decreased the tar yield and the yield of CO2 produced from biomass. The cold gas efficiency (CGE) of pine sawdust reached 87.06% at the CO2/C equivalence ratio of 0.25, whereas that of rice straw reached 73.35% at the CO2/C equivalence ratio of 0.50. When compared with air gasification, the CO2/air gasification increased the CGE of pine sawdust and rice straw by 4.20% and 9.17%, respectively. However, excessive CO2 was unfavorable to the gasification process. As the temperature increased, the yields of CO and H2 increased, and the tar yield decreased, thus improving the syngas quality. This study indicated that the addition of the proper level of CO2 for gasification improved the overall gasification efficiency. Moreover, the improvement for rice straw (herbaceous plant) was more noteworthy than for pine sawdust (woody plant).

The pyrolysis of briquettes made from biomass is an available and economic technological route for the production of briquette charcoal, but by-products (tar and gas) cannot be brought into full utilization, leading to the waste of resources and the addition of environmental concerns. Temperature is the most important parameter that affects the distributions and properties of briquette charcoal. This work investigated the three kinds of products of the pyrolysis of sawdust briquette in a fixed bed across a wide temperature range (250 to 950 °C). The purpose of this experiment was to study the pyrolysis process and the properties of the resulting products (briquette charcoal, liquid, and gas) of sawdust briquettes and explore the optimum operating temperature to generate good quality briquette charcoal, liquid, and gaseous products simultaneously. According to the results, the optimum pyrolysis temperature range was 450 to 650 °C, for which the briquette charcoal produced within this range had the highest calorific value (2,9.14 to 30.21 MJ/kg). Meanwhile, the liquid product is considered to be useful for liquid fuels or valuable chemical materials, and the low heating value of the gaseous product was 11.79 to 14.85 MJ/Nm 3 in this temperature range.
