Characterization and genetic status of Banana bunchy top virus isolated from Okinawa, Japan

Abstract: Isolates of Banana bunchy top virus (BBTV), which causes bunchy top disease in bananas, were collected in field surveys on seven islands in Okinawa Prefecture, Japan. From 44 banana samples, one isolate from each island was selected, and the DNA-1 and DNA-3 components were sequenced. Analysis of the major common region of DNA-1 showed that BBTV in Okinawa belongs to the Asian group of BBTV. DNA-1 and DNA-3 analysis revealed that Okinawan BBTV had a closer relationship with isolates from Taiwan and the Philippi… Show more

“…They attributed this relatively high level of sequence variation to the virus having been present in the region for a long time. The low sequence variation of Asian group BBTV (less than 1%) in Okinawa, occurring over at least 31 years [28], would seem not to agree with the previously mentioned rates of BBTV divergence. Possibly this seemingly anomalously low diversity is due to bottlenecks occurring during movement of the virus, in infected suckers, between plantations which are on separate islands.…”

“…An Indian BBTV isolate was found to also belong to the South Pacific group. Further, BBTV isolates from Australia [7,10], China [11] Japan, Philippines [12,13], and Pakistan [14] have been characterized based on the six DNA components. Two isolates of a novel Babuvirus (Abaca 0 bunchy top virus, ABTV) causing bunchy top symptom were also characterized recently from abaca 0 (Musa textilis) in the Philippines and from banana (Musa sp.)…”

“…The yield of banana each year is approximately 100 million tons worldwide (Furuya et al 2005), and more than 1.2 million tons in China alone (Ma 2006). Guangxi is one of the largest banana-producing provinces in China with banana plantations located mainly in the southeast to southwest regions.…”
