Characterization and molecular epidemiology of extensively prevalent nosocomial isolates of drug-resistant Acinetobacter spp

Abstract: ABSTRACT. Acinetobacter sp isolates deserve special attention once they have emerged globally in healthcare institutions because they display numerous intrinsic and acquired drug-resistance mechanisms. This study assessed the antibiotic susceptibility profile, the presence of the genetic marker bla , and the clonal relationship among 34 nosocomial isolates of Acinetobacter spp obtained at a hospital in southeastern Brazil. Antibiotic sensitivity analysis was performed by the standard disc-diffusion method. Al… Show more

“…Three sectors of the hospital, the ICU, wards, and apartments, with very distinctive characteristics in terms of both the types of patients and the physical structures, were the probable sites of acquisition/transmission of the bacterium. Similar results, including the genetic profiles of the patients, the place and time when they were hospitalized, were observed in a previous study of nosocomial A. baumannii isolates from the same hospital (Carvalho et al, 2016;Cheikh et al, 2018).…”

“…The bands sharing analysis among these isolates revealed the presence or absence of 1 or 3 bands in disagreement, which leads the authors to hypothesize possible mutation among the isolates. Carvalho et al (2016) analyzing the genetic profile of nosocomial isolates of Acinetobacter baumannni through DNA polymorphism analysis by ERIC-PCR also suggested the same hypothesis for isolates with high genetic similarity.…”

“…The presence of genes that encode the expression of carbapenem-type beta-lactamases has been described in Acinetobacter spp. [19,20] and Klebsiella pneumoniae [21,22]. These organisms are also potential etiologic agents of bovine mastitis [23][24][25][26], as well as disseminators of resistance genes to other pathogens [27].…”

“…These organisms are also potential etiologic agents of bovine mastitis [23][24][25][26], as well as disseminators of resistance genes to other pathogens [27]. In Acinetobacter baumannii, resistance to carbapenem agents can be attributed to the presence of the gene bla Oxa23 [19,20] and to the gene bla KPC in K. pneumoniae [21,22]. The presence of the gene bla Oxa23 has already been reported in pathogens other than A. baumannii, confirming the transferability of this gene to other species of microorganisms [28,29].…”
