Characterization, molecular dynamics, and encapsulation ability of β-cyclodextrin polymers crosslinked by polyethylene glycol

Abstract: A series of water-insoluble cyclodextrin polymers (CDP) was prepared by crosslinking β-cyclodextrin (CD) with polyethylene glycol diglycidyl ether (PEGDE). Similarly, a reference CDP was prepared using ethylene glycol diglycidyl ether (EGDE). Increasing the feed ratio of PEGDE to CD in the reaction mixture led to high degrees of crosslinking. Relaxation measurements revealed structural homogeneity among the CDPs, which exhibited mobilities that strongly depended on the chain lengths of the crosslinking agents.… Show more

“…16,17 Among the three types of natural CDs (i.e., α-CD, β-CD, and γ-CD), β-CD is the cheapest and excellent at removing phenol from wastewater, given that its cavity size is well-matched to the size of phenol. 19,20 Although epichlorohydrin (EPI) has been the most extensively utilized crosslinker in the production of β-CD polymer, it has a major drawback in that it produces toxic and carcinogenic byproducts in the β-CD crosslinking process. 19,20 Although epichlorohydrin (EPI) has been the most extensively utilized crosslinker in the production of β-CD polymer, it has a major drawback in that it produces toxic and carcinogenic byproducts in the β-CD crosslinking process.…”

“…Traditional β‐CD‐based polymers are treated for chemical crosslinking with toxic epichlorohydrin and other small linkers in order to improve their chemical and physical properties. β‐CD‐based polymers with small linkers have little framework nanoporosity besides inherent CD cavities, limiting the access of adsorbate molecules and thus the adsorption capacity and efficiency . Recently, crosslinked β‐CD‐based polymers were reported with a large surface area and mesoporous structure that were able to rapidly remove a variety of organic micropollutants .…”

“…There is great interest in these compounds, reflecting their ability to form supramolecular structures with exploitable guest‐host interactions . CDs containing polyethylene glycol (PEG) soft units have been widely used to synthesise drug carrier gels for pharmaceutical applications . Drug carriers must maintain their integrity to deliver the drug to a specific target.…”
