We report the discovery of a dodecagonal quasicrystal Mn 72.3 Si 15.6 Cr 9.7 Al 1.8 Ni 0.6 —composed of a periodic stacking of atomic planes with quasiperiodic translational order and 12-fold symmetry along the two directions perpendicular to the planes—accidentally formed by an electrical discharge event in an eolian dune in the Sand Hills near Hyannis, Nebraska, United States. The quasicrystal, coexisting with a cubic crystalline phase with composition Mn 68.9 Si 19.9 Ni 7.6 Cr 2.2 Al 1.4 , was found in a fulgurite consisting predominantly of fused and melted sand along with traces of melted conductor metal from a nearby downed power line. The fulgurite may have been created by a lightning strike that combined sand with material from downed power line or from electrical discharges from the downed power line alone. Extreme temperatures of at least 1,710 °C were reached, as indicated by the presence of SiO 2 glass in the sample. The dodecagonal quasicrystal is an example of a quasicrystal of any kind formed by electrical discharge, suggesting other places to search for quasicrystals on Earth or in space and for synthesizing them in the laboratory.

During operation, cables of overhead power lines (OPLs) are exposed to the impact that differs in separate parts of the OPL span due to the different responses of cables near the clamps and far from them. This paper presents the results of a study of aluminum and steel wires cut from such separate parts of ACSR cables before and after exploitation. Structural, microstructural, and elastic–microplastic properties of wires and their changes during operation were studied through optical microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray microanalysis, electron backscattering diffraction, X-ray diffraction, densitometry, and acoustic measurements. The characteristics of the properties of the wires along the span were found to change in a coordinated manner. Numerical estimates of the influence of the steel core on aging the ACSR cable were obtained. Changes in the properties of the wires, as well as oxidization and corrosion of their near-surface layers, were studied in detail. Quantitative values of the characteristics of properties, the most distant from those observed in the new wires, were revealed for samples of aluminum and steel wires cut from the cable at 1/4 span and near clamps. It is assumed that these cable parts should be the most crucial for cable durability.

In this work, the degradation of mechanical properties of galvanized steel under wind and sand erosion environment was studied. The law of weight loss of galvanized steel in corrosive environment was studied by accelerated corrosion experiment. The micro-morphology and formation mechanism of corrosion products were investigated in detail by scanning electron microscopy and x-ray diffraction, respectively. In addition, the mechanical properties of galvanized steel such as elastic modulus, yield strength, ultimate strength and elongation were investigated in detail. The results show that the weight loss rate of the zinc layer on the surface of galvanized steel follows an exponential function. Without the protection of the zinc layer, the mechanical properties of the steel will decrease quickly. Therefore, a zinc layer on the steel is necessary. Besides, it is necessary to strengthen the hot-dip galvanizing treatment on galvanized steel. This work provides a valuable reference for the corrosion behavior and protection measures of galvanized steel in the wind and sand environment.
