Characterization of antigen-presenting dendritic cells in the peripheral blood and colonic mucosa of patients with ulcerative colitis

Abstract: Activated and mature dendritic cells may have a role in the induction of an exacerbated immune response in ulcerative colitis. This study provides the scientific and logical basis for blocking the maturation and activation of dendritic cells in ulcerative colitis as a new therapeutic intervention.

“…28 In the PB of patients with IBD, increased numbers of DC expressing CD83 and CD86 have been found and matured DC generated from peripheral blood monocytes of IBD patients show raised immune-stimulating abilities when compared with those of healthy volunteers. 39 Activated DC found at the sites of inflammation in murine models of colitis might contribute to the pathogenesis, 11 and there is increasing evidence that mucosal DC accumulated within inflamed tissue might also play a role in human IBD. 16,40 Regarding DC in the peripheral blood of IBD patients, conflicting results have been reported.…”

“…10,2003 TYPHOID VACCINE RESPONSE IN PATIENTS WITH COLECTOMIES 429 the distal ileum. The impaired T-and B-cell responses observed in the circulation of patients who have undergone colectomies suggest that the terminal ileum and colon may be of importance in the induction of systemic immune responses to the Ty21a vaccine.…”

“…The number of DCs expressing the maturation markers CD80, CD83, CD86 and CD40 is elevated in CD and UC [102][103][104][105]. DCs express also higher levels of TLR2 and TLR4 [102] and accordingly, show exaggerated response to LPS in IBD [106].…”
