“…BC and EC are two carbon fractions typically defined by their measurement technique: BC is measured optically while EC is obtained from thermal and thermaloptical methods. According to the EPA Report to Congress on Black Carbon (http://www.epa.gov/blackcarbon/), about 70 % of recent studies (year 2000 or later) that compared ambient BC and EC measurements in a wide variety of environments reported consistently obtaining a high correlation with an average of R = 0.86 ± 0.11 (Allen et al, 1999;Bae et al, 2007;Hitzenberger et al, 2006;Sahu et al, 2009;Miyazaki et al, 2008;Husain et al, 2007;Hagler et al, 2007), while the other 30 % report very low BC : EC ratios (∼0.5) and very high BC : EC ratios (∼2) (Chow et al, 2009; Babich et al, 2000;Jeong et al, 2004;Lim et al, 2003). These inter-comparison data are based on ambient measurements and not on source measurements.…”

“…Organics in atmospheric aerosols account for 10 to 70% of its total dry mass (Murphy et al, 2006). OC is found to be 3 to 12 times more than BC by mass (Molnar et al, 1999;Husain et al, 2007). Modelling studies consider OC to be scattering in nature and relates negative climate forcing to these aerosols.…”

“…As an important component of air pollution, PM has been linked to various adverse health effects (e.g., Dockery et al, 1993;Khan et al, 1993;Gwynn et al, 2000;Pope et al, 2002;Husain et al, 2007;Lodhi et al, 2009;Khan et al, 2010;Stone et al, 2010;Kim et al, 2011) as well as having general environmental effects.…”
