Characterization of Chlorhexidine-Loaded Calcium-Hydroxide Microparticles as a Potential Dental Pulp-Capping Material

Abstract: This study explores the delivery of novel calcium hydroxide [Ca(OH)2] microparticles loaded with chlorhexidine (CHX) for potential dental therapeutic and preventive applications. Herein, we introduce a new approach for drug-delivery to deep dentin-surfaces in the form of drug-loaded microparticles. Unloaded Ca(OH)2 [Ca(OH)2/Blank] and CHX-loaded/Ca(OH)2 microparticles were fabricated by aqueous chemical-precipitation technique. The synthesized-microparticles were characterized in vitro for determination of sur… Show more

“…From the calibration graph (Figure 4), the concentration of free CHX (µg/mL) was determined using the obtained linear regression equations ( R 2 > 0.99). The EE and LC were calculated using Equations (1) and (2) [30]. Based on the LC and EE, Equations (3) and (4) were created to calculate the unknown percentage concentration by weight of CHX (CHX wt %) and mass of CHX (mCHX) in the coating solution: EE (%) =mCHXa mCHXfmCHXa×100 LC (%) =mCHXemCHX@MSN×100 CHX wt%=mCHX@MSN × LC(mCHX@MSN+mPDMS) mCHX=CHX wt% ×…”

“…It has been known for some years that the combination of two of these antiseptics (i.e., 2% chlorhexidine in alcohol solution) is to be considered the best choice for skin disinfection before and after the placement of a venous access. New formulations have been developed subsequently [15].…”

“…While infrared spectra of CHX showed the presence of fingerprint of amine (CH and NH) band at ≈ 2,947 and 1,650 cm −1 as well as Raman bands of NH at 1450–1350, 1,232 cm‐1. This finding is indicative of inclusive of CHX within the material surface (Priyadarshini, Selvan, Narayanan, & Fawzy, 2017).…”
