In this thesis, I use the model plant species, Arabidopsis thaliana (Arabidopsis), to examine disease resistance associated with BLADE-ON-PETIOLE (BOP) 1 and 2 genes and suberin polymer. Plants are the target of a broad spectrum of pathogens, including fungi and bacteria. To detect and actively fight these pathogens, plants have innate and induced immune systems as well as pre-formed barriers. Firstly, I examined the role of the BOP1/2 and knowledge of plant biology. Throughout, Dr. Smith constantly gave me all the support, guidance and encouragement to make this my hope and life dream a reality. I would not have been able to complete this study without his understanding, thoughtfulness, and assistance given during the difficult times I encountered with my health and emotional crisis, coupled with the passing away of my beloved mother and elder brother in addition to the COVID-19 pandemic stress. Wow! It's been a journey. I am grateful to Dr. Owen Rowland and Dr. Thor Arnason for their guidance as my committee advisors and the review of my thesis work. Dr. Owen Rowland gave me the opportunity to attend his Genetics lectures in order to brush up on my knowledge in genetics, after leaving school for well over a decade.
