Characterization of muscles associated with the articular membrane in the dorsal surface of the crayfish abdomen

Abstract: The anatomy, physiology, and biochemistry of the dorsal membrane muscle (DMA) and the superficial extensor muscle accessory head (SEAcc) in the abdomen of the crayfish, Procambarus clarkii and lobster, Homarus americanus, are reported. These muscles have not been previously characterized physiologically or biochemically. The anatomy was originally described by Pilgrim and Wiersma (1963. J Morph 113:453-587). The arrangement of these muscles varies depending on the abdominal segment. The function of the dorsal … Show more

“…The anti-P75 antibody is a polyclonal serum developed in rabbit injected with gel purified P75 protein and has been used previously for Western blotting (Sohn et al, 2000;Mykles et al, 2002;Medler and Mykles, 2003). Serial sections were processed as described above, to the point of being re-hydrated through the graded ethanol series and then into water.…”

“…Gels were then either processed for silver staining (Wray et al,'81) or for transfer of the proteins to PVDF membranes for Western blotting (Sohn et al, 2000;Mykles et al, 2002;Medler and Mykles, 2003). The anti-troponin antibody was raised in rabbit against purified lobster troponin I and is a polyclonal serum that reacts with different troponin I isoforms in lobsters and crayfish (Sohn et al, 2000;Koenders et al, 2004;Medler et al, 2004). The relative amounts of specific proteins in bands from stained gels and blots were determined using scanning densitometry (NIH Image 1.62; Bethesda, MD).…”

“…The joint was also rapidly stretched and held for 10 s. (B2) Two abdominal segments are illustrated. A schematic view of the deep extensor muscles (looking from ventral to dorsal) is provided (see Sohn, Mykles, & Cooper, 2000). The crab limb is shown from the side with the position of the tendons and PD organ as they would be in transparency (A1; Majeed et al, 2013;Whitear, 1960).…”

“…The second root is primarily composed of 100s of afferent sensory inputs which monitor stimuli from the cuticular surface in the corresponding segment; however, there are a few motor neurons to the superficial and deep extensor muscles, as well as to the efferent control of the MROs (Sohn et al, 2000). In addition, the MRO sensory afferents are present in this nerve root.…”
