Characterization of Newly Introduced Exotic Plum Cultivars for Character Association and Genetic Improvement

Abstract: Exotic plum cultivars have been introduced at Central Institute of Temperate Horticulture, Srinagar in order to broaden the spectrum of existing germplasm and recommendation of better cultivars for their commercial cultivation. The present study consisted of fourteen different plum cultivars of uniform age replicated thrice in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD). The data recorded revealed that the bud swell and tight cluster stage was first in cultivar Beauty on 30 th March and 2 nd April, respectively.… Show more

“…For Japanese plum cultivars, the coefficient of determination was superior only for four characteristics, solid soluble, fruit weight, yield, and harvest date. However, its coefficients of variation were moderate; similar results were found by Cosmulescu et al (2018) for myrobalan plum cultivars but contrasting with the results obtained for Sundouri et al (2017) for 14 Japanese plum cultivars. Japanese plums have a more diverse background than other plum species.…”

“…When growing the introduced plum cultivars, it is important to determine their characteristics in changing climatic scenario for their adaptation in local environment. Presently, Santa Rosa is the leading cultivar of plum in Himalayan states of Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh, occupies about 75 per cent of the total under plum cultivation (Sundouri et al, 2017). But, the predominance of the single cultivar leads to the glut in the market as e result the farmers do not get remunerative price for their produce and sometimes even they do not get back the cost of production Hence, there is a need to have extended ripening period to avoid the glut in the market.…”
