Characterization of Pathogenic Vibrio parahaemolyticus Isolates from Clinical Sources in Spain and Comparison with Asian and North American Pandemic Isolates

Abstract: In spite of the potential risk involved with contamination of seafood with Vibrio parahaemolyticus, there is a lack of information on the occurrence of pathogenic V. parahaemolyticus in Europe. This organism was isolated in 1999 from a large outbreak (64 cases admitted to a single hospital) associated with raw oyster consumption in Galicia, Spain, one of the most important regions in shellfish production worldwide. Two V. parahaemolyticus isolates from the 1999 Galicia outbreak, three additional clinical isola… Show more

“…El protocolo de PFGE que se utilizó para el análisis de las cepas del brote empleó la enzima NotI para generar los patrones de restricción que se muestran en la figura 1 (15) . La presencia de la región específica del gen toxR característica del clon pandémico fue analizada en todas las cepas por la técnica denominada GS-PCR.…”

“…All of the tdh þ and trh þ strains were subjected to serotyping by agglutination tests using specific antisera according to the manufacturer's instructions (Denka-Seiken, Tokyo, Japan) and to pulsedfield gel electrophoresis analysis, as described previously (Martinez-Urtaza et al, 2004). Offshore strains were compared with representative strains obtained from seawater and shellfish collected in estuarine areas located in the northwest coast of Spain over the course of previous studies.…”

“…[1][2][3][4][5][6] The main manifestation of V. parahaemolyticus infection is gastroenteritis with diarrhea, abdominal pain, vomiting, headache, fever and chills. 6 V. parahaemolyticus-induced diarrhea is inflammatory with edema, congestion of blood vessels, hemorrhage and increased level of neutrophils in the lamina propria of the intestine.…”
