Characterization of Patient-Reported Outcomes in Moderate to Severe Psoriasis

Abstract: Background: The Patient Benefit Index (PBI) is a recently developed instrument to assess patient satisfaction with treatment. It has been applied to only a limited number of psoriasis patients. Objective: Characterization of patient-reported outcomes (PRO) in patients with moderate to severe psoriasis Methods: 1,787 patients with plaque psoriasis were documented. Psoriasis Area and Severity Index (PASI), body surface area (BSA), Dermatology Life Quality Index (DLQI) and PBI were determined. Correlations were c… Show more

“…However, missing information on disease severity regarding the investigated population makes it difficult to compare both results. Even so, this observation has been detected in several studies, which found negligible or missing association between higher PASI scores and DLQI or HRQoL in general . A possible explanation may be that patients with higher impact of psoriasis have higher variance in answering their PRO′s, e.g.…”

“…Patient-reported outcomes elicit evaluations of disease severity and quality of life directly from patients, and they are an integral part of outcome assessment [7]. Traditional patient-reported outcomes seek the perspectives of the patients in disease severity and quality of life and have been validated in various clinical and research settings [8].…”

“…Traditional patient-reported outcomes seek the perspectives of the patients in disease severity and quality of life and have been validated in various clinical and research settings [8]. Newer patient-reported outcome measures even consider personal therapeutic goals by accounting for individual preferences [7]. In this study, the NPF surveys asked patients to directly assess BSA involvement and categorize disease severity based on these BSA measurements.…”

“…Despite this, not all countries have their own treatment guidelines. Although the European S3 guidelines in psoriasis [74] can help to fill the gap in these countries, they cannot reflect local policies and practices. For this reason, clinicians often rate national guidelines more highly than European guidelines.…”

“…The overall benefit from treatment -indexed as 'Patient benefit index' is highly predictive for QoL, patient satisfaction, and patient reported benefits from treatment [73]. It is also more predictive for the overall patient benefit than clinical outcomes such as delta PASI or delta BSA [74].…”
