New Superior Varieties (VUB) are innovations that can increase rice production. The objectives of this research are to: (1) Collect data and information related to consumer preferences and VUB adoption rates. ( 2) Develop recommendations to accelerate the adoption of VUB. This research methodology was carried out by collecting data through literature studies and collecting secondary data from various related agencies. The results of the study show that many factors influence the adoption rate of VUB. The spread and adoption of VUB is very low due to its characteristics which do not match the preferences of farmers and consumers. The texture and taste of rice are the main factors and determine the preferences of rice consumers in West Sumatra. The acceleration of VUB adoption needs to be supported by increasing the intensity and quality of extension. The conclusion from the study is that there is a close relationship between consumer preferences and VUB adoption in rice farming. Prioritizing productivity improvements without considering consumer preferences could hinder VUB's adoption goals. Specific VUB needs to be immediately created and supported with a reliable extension strategy. Recommendations to increase VUB adoption are: (1) Balitbangda collaborated with research institutions or university to create specific VUB by utilizing local varieties as parents. (2) Increasing extension performance to educate farmers intensively. (3) The agriculture office helps provide specific VUB seeds to farmers. (4) Methods of dissemination and extension to farmers need to be perfected.

This paper examines the gendered trait preferences for rice and their role in the adoption of improved rice varieties among men and women rice farmers in Ghana. Four hundred rice farm households and 261 consumers were surveyed across 20 communities using a simple random sampling technique. Kendall’s coefficient of concordance, Tobit, and the multivariate probit regressions were used in the analyses. The results show differences in preferences for cooking quality traits and postharvest traits among men and women farmers. There was also a gender differential in the intensity of purchasing rice among men and women consumers. The results show that rice farmers’ decisions to adopt any of the four varieties—AGRA rice, Jasmine, Togo Marshall, or Amankwatia—are influenced by age, being married or indigenous, years of schooling, off-farm activities, farming experience, household size, farm size, FBO membership, extension contact, market proximity, and access to credit. To improve the rice value chain in Ghana, rice breeding efforts should consider varieties with trait preferences such as being tolerant of pest and diseases, aromatic, early maturing, and tolerance to shattering. However, to enhance the consumption of improved rice varieties, breeding efforts should target varieties that are aromatic, good textured, and have medium-sized grains for female consumers, while for male consumers preferred varieties would be less easily broken, white grain color, translucent, and with short cooking time.

The present study was carried out to analyse the constraints faced by rice growers in Cauvery Delta Zone (CDZ) of Tamil Nadu in use of Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) modern rice varieties and to elicit suggestions for improving the adoption of TNAU modern rice varieties. Ex-Post Facto Research Design was followed in this study since it aimed to know the constraints faced by the rice growers. The study was conducted during May and June 2022. The selected districts for the study were Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam and Mayiladuthurai based on maximum area under rice cultivation. From each of the four districts, two blocks were selected and from the selected blocks, two villages from each block were selected for the study based on maximum area under rice cultivation. Based on proportionate random sampling technique, 160 respondents were selected for the study. The responses of the respondents were subjected to frequency and percentage analysis. More than three fourth of the respondents expressed lodging (83.10%) followed by disease infestation (81.90%) and pest infestation (80.60%) as the major constraints. Lack of awareness and knowledge in adopting TNAU modern rice varieties was expressed by around one-third (36.30%) of the respondents. Availability of non-lodging varieties (91.90%), flood tolerant varieties (91.30%), availability of disease-resistant varieties (90.00%), pest-resistant varieties (89.40%) and increasing promotional efforts (85.00%) were the major suggestions given by the rice growers for increasing the use TNAU modern rice varieties.
