Characterization of stimulated Brillouin scattering in a few-mode fiber

Abstract: Characterization of stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) in a few-mode fiber (FMF) is experimentally demonstrated, where the Brillouin gain spectrum (BGS) of intramodal or intermodal SBS is analyzed for different pump-probe pairs of four LP modes--LP(01), LP(11), LP(21), and LP(02) modes--guided in the fiber. A mode-division multiplexer composed of concatenated mode-selective couplers is applied for selective launching of each LP mode, and a differential measurement scheme is adopted for the analysis of the B… Show more

“…Recently, there is a growing interest in developing FMFbased distributed fiber sensors, which can attain higher spatial resolution and sensitivity compared with conventional single-mode approaches [51,52]. In particular, Brillouin dynamic gratings (BDG) and Brillouin optical time-domain analysis (BOTDA) thru generating SBS in FMF have been proposed successively for sensing purposes [53,54].…”

“…The fiber parameters are rco=5.09µm, NA=0.22, and the laser wavelength is 1550nm. The corresponding experiment has been carried out by Song et al 6 . By comparing with the experiment results, it can be seen that the main characteristics of the BGS profile are reproduced well by the model, especially the multi-peak features.…”

“…Recent works performed on FMFs have highlighted the potential of exploiting the nonlinear stimulated Brillouin scattering in such fibers towards SDM 16, 17 and fiber-optic sensing applications 3, 18 . In this study, we report the non-destructive nonlinear characterization of vector modes in FMF – excited via a tunable long period fiber grating (LPFG) – by means of their Brillouin gain spectrum (BGS).…”
