Characterization of the Activity Spectrum of MON 88702 and the Plant-Incorporated Protectant Cry51Aa2.834_16

Abstract: The spectrum of insecticidal activity of Cry51Aa2.834_16 protein targeting hemipteran and thysanopteran insect pests in cotton was characterized by selecting and screening multiple pest and non-pest species, based on representation of ecological functional groups, taxonomic relatedness (e.g. relationship to species where activity was observed), and availability for effective testing. Seven invertebrate orders, comprising 12 families and 17 representative species were screened for susceptibility to Cry51Aa2.834… Show more

“…This result suggests that adult females of both species can detect and avoid the presence of MON 88702 expressed in cotton seedlings. Because MON 88702 had limited acute adult toxicity, these behavioral differences may be the most significant factor driving differences in F. fusca damage observed in field studies measuring efficacy …”

“…Bayer has developed MON 88702 cotton, the first crop that expresses Cry51Aa2.834_16 Bt toxin to control targeted hemipteran and thysanopteran crop pests . The Cry51Aa2.834_16 Bt toxin (hereafter referred to as MON 88702) expressed in cotton was modified to selectively enhance insecticidal activity against piercing‐sucking pests .…”

“…However, more recently, genetically modified cotton plants have been developed to express insecticidal activity towards L. hesperus and L. lineolaris (Baum et al, 2012;Gowda et al, 2016;Bachman et al, 2017). “…An example in this system is a new transgenic cotton cultivar which has been developed to be resistant to Lygus spp. plant bugs but may also be resilient to other mirids, including P. seriatus . If there are genotypes of P. seriatus that are associated with cotton and that do not have gene flow with genotypes associated with other host plants, then the cotton‐associated genotypes could potentially evolve resistance to the transgenic cotton, as would be expected with chronic exposure to any new transgenic or insecticidal control .…”
