Characterization of the CCD and CMOS cameras for grating-based phase-contrast tomography

Abstract: In this article we present the quantitative characterization of CCD and CMOS sensors which are used at the experiments for microtomography operated by HZG at PETRA III at DESY in Hamburg, Germany. A standard commercial CCD camera is compared to a camera based on a CMOS sensor. This CMOS camera is modified for grating-based differential phase-contrast tomography. The main goal of the project is to quantify and to optimize the statistical parameters of this camera system. These key performance parameters such as … Show more

“…Once trimmed, the first specimen was stained in 1% iodine solution and critical point dried. Synchrotron radiation-based microcomputed tomography scans of this critical point dried sponge were recorded at the Imaging Beamline P05 (IBL; Greving et al, 2014;Haibel et al, 2010;Wilde et al, 2016) operated by the Helmholtz-Zentrum-Geesthacht at the storage ring PETRA III (Deutsches Elektronen Synchrotron -DESY, Hamburg, Germany). Imaging was done at photon energy of 35 keV.…”

“…Imaging was done at photon energy of 35 keV. Projections were recorded with a sample to detector distance of 200 mm using a custom developed 20 MP CMOS camera system (Lytaev et al, 2014) with an effective pixel size of 1.28 μm. For each tomographic scan 3601 projections at equal intervals between 0 and π were recorded.…”

“…Three-dimensional models of both fossils were developed from SRµCT scans that were done at PETRA III in beamline P05 (operated by Helmholtz-Zentrum Hereon) at the Deutsches Elektronen Synchrotron DESY (Greving et al 2014;Haibel et al 2010) using a custom-developed 20 MP CMOS camera system (Lytaev et al 2014). Amber pieces were mounted on sample stubs with beeswax and then rotated through the beam, with each scan roughly taking 20-50 min.…”

“…This allowed for a high spatial resolution, high tissue contrast and rapid image acquisition. 177 specimens were scanned at the imaging cluster of the KIT Light Source (Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), Karlsruhe, Germany), 39 specimens at the IBL-P05 imaging beamline [ 40 42 ] (operated by the Helmholtz-Zentrum Hereon at PETRA III, Deutsches Elektronen Synchrotron (DESY), Hamburg, Germany), and one specimen at the TOMCAT beamline [ 43 ] (Swiss Light Source (SLS), Paul-Scherrer-Institute (PSI), Villigen, Switzerland). Two larger specimens were scanned with a commercially available µCT-machine (phoenix nanotom, General Electric, Boston, MA) operated by Hereon.…”
