Characterization of the Predominant Wind Speed and Direction in Santa Catarina, Brazil

Abstract: The state of Santa Catarina presents significant spatial variations in its climate, with different regional peculiarities. Wind is considered an important meteorological variable, but it is not sufficiently studied and there is a shortage of information on this subject in the region of Santa Catarina. Thus, the objective of this article was to analyze the behavior of the winds in five regions of the state, with different aspects: altitude, topography and climatology patterns. For that, daily data from National… Show more

“…2 ). Moreover, a persistent influence of the NE winds generated by the offshore west branch of the SASH 30 , 31 would maintain the active dunefield. Transgressive dunefields are also reported for the Cassino Strandplain (Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil) for the periods between ~ 100 and 500 CE and ~ 1750 CE 41 , suggesting that the formation of dunefields in both locations—located 700 km apart—has been controlled by the variability of large-scale atmospheric patterns and teleconnections.…”

“…The easterly wave component of the mean effective energy flux is locally generated (Fig. 2 a) in response to the persistent north-easterly winds at the boundary of the semi-permanent SASH system 21 , 22 , 31 . A strengthening of the local wind fields tends to occur with the passage of a frontal systems, normally accompanied by high and low pressures systems that intensify the sea-level pressure gradients in the region 27 , 28 .…”

“…The light blue and light green shades represent the ocean and continental sectors, respectively. There are two predominant wind patterns in the region [41]. The main pattern is from the NE quadrant (30 • -60 • ), which is found approximately 23.5% of the time with the mean wind direction θ = 45.2 • and speed U = 8.4 m s −1 in 2017.…”
