Characterizations of Adenovirus Type 41 Isolates from Children with Acute Gastroenteritis in Japan, Vietnam, and Korea

Abstract: Genetic and antigenic characterizations of 70 strains of adenovirus type 41 (Ad41), isolated between 1998 and 2001 from children in Japan, Vietnam, and Korea, were done by DNA restriction enzyme (RE) analysis, sequencing analysis, and monoclonal antibody (MAb)-based enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Eight genome types were observed in the present study, among which D25, D26, D27, and D28 were novel genome types. These eight genome types were divided into two genome-type clusters (GTCs) based on phylog… Show more

“…However, these methods are time consuming and labor intensive and isolation of the virus may be unsuccessful because of low titer of the virus available in fecal specimens [Li et al, 2004]. Hence, amplification of the adenovirus DNA directly from fecal specimens using the hexon region primers of the viral genome and sequencing of the PCR products or restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) are preferred for molecular characterization and typing of adenoviruses [Filho et al, 2007].…”

“…To date, more than 51 human adenovirus serotypes have been identified and classified into six subgenera A-F based on their biological and genetic characteristics [De Jong et al, 1993]. Among these subgenera, subgenus ''F'' represented by two serotypes, that is, adenovirus type 40 and 41, has been found to be associated with acute gastroenterititis and occupies 1-20% cases of diarrheal disease [Li et al, 2004;Shimizu et al, 2007].…”

“…Types 40 and 41 are responsible for 1%-20% cases of diarrhoea in young children. Other species such as A (types 12, 18, and 31), C (types 1, 2, and 5) and D (types 28,29,30,32,37,[43][44][45][46] have also been associated with diarrhoea (9)(10)(11).…”

“…To date, 52 human adenovirus serotypes have been identified and classified into six subgenera (subgenera A to F) on the basis of their biological and genetic characteristics (50). Among these subgenera, subgenus F (AdV F), representing adenovirus type 40 (AdV-40) and AdV-41, has been found to be associated with acute gastroenteritis and is responsible for 1 to 20% of the cases of diarrheal disease globally in both outpatients and hospitalized children (5,24,41,42,48). AdV-40 and AdV-41 primarily affect young children less than 2 years of age and occur throughout the year.…”
