Charcot-Marie-Tooth Disease in Molise, a Central-Southern Region of Italy: An Epidemiological Study

Abstract: An epidemiological survey of Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (CMT) was conducted in Molise, a central-southern region of Italy, from March 1998 to June 2000. Fifty-eight cases of CMT in 13 unrelated families were identified within the selected area. The prevalence of all subtypes of CMT was 17.5/100,000. All families underwent a bio-molecular analysis to disclose the duplication at gene locus 17p11.2 in order to ascertain the diagnosis of CMT type 1A. Our data revealed that 64% of all the observed patients had CMT… Show more

“…In conclusion, the prevalence of CMT found in Belgrade (9.7/100,000) is similar to the prevalence in Southern European countries [11,12] . However, we suggest that the number of CMT patients in Belgrade population would be greater if there was an official protocol for the discovery of oligo-presymptomatic cases -probably by complete testing of whole families with at least 1 member affected by CMT disease -and if we had been in a position to include all members of the majority of investigated families in the study, who were scattered and out of Belgrade territory.…”

“…The higher prevalence in the current study is probably due to more cases being diagnosed because of the higher [8,9,[11][12][13] . The diagnosis in this study is based on typical clinical symptoms and the results of neurophysiologic studies [1] .…”

“…This presents a problem in case finding, and most prevalence studies have included a number of individuals with little or no symptoms that were only discovered when seemingly unaffected family members were studied. This may explain the somewhat higher prevalence found in other studies [6,8,11,12] . We only included individuals who sought medical attention because of their symptoms.…”
