Charge transport in a two-dimensional molecular organic semiconductor

Abstract: Charge transport has been studied in a germanium-centred oligothiophene cruciform featuring 2-D close packing in the bulk. The morphology has been found to play a significant role in charge carrier transport, evidenced by time-of-flight and field effect transistor measurements. Thermal step-annealing leads to the formation of smaller crystalline domains which are favourable for charge transport in device applications

“…Other parameters governing performance such as short-circuit current density ( J sc ), and open-circuit voltage ( V oc ) of these devices, are remarkable, considering the size of aggregates observed within the active layer, for example an open-circuit voltage of 0.71 V, which is greater than that reported for OPVs with poly(3-hexylthiophene) [ 53 ]. These aggregates, observed by means of a profiler and wide-field microscopy, are detrimental to device performance [ 54 ]. Hence, the development of similar compounds with improved solubility and a more favourable morphology would hopefully lead to more efficient OPVs.…”

“…69 Such morphology changes can alter the topography of the HEL, which in turn can influence OPV performances. 88,[114][115][116][117][118] To assess such an effect with PFI mixing, atomic force microscopy (AFM) was performed (Section ESI-1.3.1 †). Fig.…”
