Chemical and Physical Processes that Affect Atrazine and Distribution in Soil Systems

Abstract: Interactions studied included adsorption and desorption of atrazine by Ca2+, Mg2+, and Na+ saturated soil material and the effect of chloride salts of the above cations on solubility of crystalline atrazine. It was found that adsorption isotherms follow the Freundlich equation. The desorption isotherm had the same shape as the adsorption isotherm but followed a different path back to the starting point. This hysteresis effect encountered indicates that adsorption and desorption of atrazine are irreversible rea… Show more

“…For the study of desorption, rather than use the method of Swanson and Dutt (1973) which consists of successively diluting the solution in contact with a solid covered with a given adsorption layer and measuring the remaining adsorption after 2 hr of agitation, a method was adopted closer to the method of study of the adsorption evolution with time. Six or seven samples of silica covered with a known quantity of carbofuran, freshly centifugated from their equilibrium solution, are each mixed with 10 ml water.…”

“…This can be attributed to irreversibility or hysteresis during desorption. This is a common trend and has been reported for the desorption of a number of pesticides like atrazine (Swanson and Dutt, 1973;Raman et al, 1988), prometryn (Murray et al, 1975 andLaFleur, 1976), thiabendazole (Aharonson and Kafkafi, 1976), napropamide (Wu et al, 1975), 2,4,5-T (Koskinen et al, 1979;Koskinen and Cheng, 1983), fluormetryn (Savage and Wauchope, 1974) and parathion (Saltzman et al, 1972).…”
