The high mercury contamination in the ex-gold mining soil is the impetus for the development of soil remediation with amelioration technology that utilizes sub-bituminous coal activated with 10% NaOH (SC-NaOH) to modify the soil surface charge by affecting the chemical properties of the ex-gold mining soil. This research aimed to determine and study the modified surface charge of ex-gold mining soil ameliorated with SC - NaOH. The experimental design used in this study was a Completely Randomized Design with three replications. The treatment was implemented in a pot with equivalent dose: A = 0 (0.0g); B = 10 (0.5g); C = 20 (1.0g); D = 30 (1.5g), and (E) 40 t ha-1 (2g 100g-1 soil). The results showed amelioration technology with SC - NaOH, at the application of 40 t ha-1 on ex-gold mining soils, can modification of soil surface charge through changes in chemical characteristics by increasing the pH H2O EC, CEC, and SOM, respectively of 5.77; 4.33 dS m-1; 2.41 cmol(+) kg-1 and 17.15% compared to the control. Soil surface charge supported by soil minerals [Quartz (SiO2), Graphite (C), and Periclase (MgO)] and also happening decreases transmittance in the OH group (0.18%), which causes an increased adsorption capacity of the soil to Hg, which causes a decrease in total Hg of 2.84 mg kg-1 compared to the control. The correlation between total Hg and soil chemical properties in ex-gold mining soil ameliorated with SC â€“ NaOH (Total Hg with SOM > Î”pH > EC > pH H2O > CEC).

Humic substances (HS) are originated from naturally decaying biomass. The main products of HS are humic acids, fulvic acids, and humins. HS are extracted from natural origins (e.g., coals, lignite, forest, and river sediments). However, the production of HS from these resources is not environmentally friendly, potentially impacting ecological systems. Earlier theories claimed that the HS might be transformed from lignin by enzymatic or aerobic oxidation. On the other hand, lignin is a by-product of pulp and paper production processes and is available commercially. However, it is still under-utilized. To address the challenges of producing environmentally friendly HS and accommodating lignin in valorized processes, the production of lignin-derived HS has attracted attention. Currently, several chemical modification pathways can be followed to convert lignin into HS-like materials, such as alkaline aerobic oxidation, alkaline oxidative digestion, and oxidative ammonolysis of lignin. This review paper discusses the fundamental aspects of lignin transformation to HS comprehensively. The applications of natural HS and lignin-derived HS in various fields, such as soil enrichment, fertilizers, wastewater treatment, water decontamination, and medicines, were comprehensively discussed. Furthermore, the current challenges associated with the production and use of HS from lignin were described.

The article presents the results of work on the determination of the physicochemical properties and biological activity of dry humic-containing agrochemicals produced on an industrial scale, sold in retail chains for personal household plots. To assess the effectiveness of their use, samples of dry agrochemicals containing humic substances and intended for pre-sowing, foliar and root treatment of plants were selected. The physicochemical properties of the samples were studied, such as the yield of free humic acids, the ash content of humic acids, the alkali content, and solubility in water. But the main goal of the study is to study the biological activity of the activity, which is associated with the determination of the germination of cucumber seeds, the size of the stems, roots and weight of plants under the influence of humic substances compared with an increase in the number of cucumber seeds in water. Analysis of the yield as a result of the experiments showed that the preparations for the study of properties have a high biological activity, which allows them to be used as plant growth stimulants. Therefore, the application of humic agrochemicals in agriculture as a result of plant infection and plant growth will be highly effective.
