Antibiotic resistant Salmonella is a major threat to poultry industry and public health. Medicinal plants are an effective alternative of antibiotics for the control and treatment of multiple drug resistant Salmonella. The objective of this study was to evaluate the in-vitro activity of essential oils of some medicinal plants against multiple drug resistant Salmonella of poultry origin and to determine their active ingredients. Essential oils of Cuminum cyminum, Cinnamomum zeylanicum, Eucalyptus globulus, Allium sativum and Nigella sativa were prepared by steam distillation and their active ingredients were determined by Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis. Activity of oils against Salmonella enteritidis (n=05) and Salmonella gallinarum (n=05) was determined by well diffusion assay. Broth microdilution assay was employed to determine the minimum inhibitory concentrations of oils. Well diffusion assay revealed that C. zeylanicum and E. globulus had better activity against salmonellae (26±7.6 mm and 16±6.8 mm, respectively) as compared to C. cyminum, A. sativum and N. sativa (8±5.9, 10±6.1, 8±4.7 mm, respectively). Minimum inhibitory concentrations of C. zeylanicum and E. globulus against Salmonella were 64.1±32.1 and 68.9±32.9 µg/mL, respectively. The GC-MS analysis revealed presence of diverse phytochemicals in all essential oils. Major antimicrobial phyto-constituents of essential oils of E. globulus and C. zeylanicum were eucalyptol (82.85%) and 1R-α-Pinene (13.781%), and cinnamaldehyde (64.14%) and eugenol (8.9%), respectively. It is concluded that essential oils of C. zeylanicum and E. globulus have excellent in vitro anti-Salmonella activity. It is insinuated that these extracts may be commercialized as an alternative of antibiotics for the control of Salmonellae in poultry after detailed in vivo evaluations.

The present study focused on evaluation of antibacterial effect of Cinnamomum zeylanicum and Curcuma longa extracts and their synergistic effect with some antibiotic. Antimicrobial activity of plant extracts against Escherichia coli. C. longa was showed the highest effect against E. coli with a zone of inhibition 13 and 14.5 mm at a concentration of 100 and 200 mg/mL, respectively. While antimicrobial activity was observed by C. zeylanicum, with a zone of inhibition 9 and 13.9 mm at a concentration of 100 and 200 mg/mL, respectively. Antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus with a zone of inhibition 11 and 16.8 mm at a concentration of 100 and 200 mg/mL, respectively, of C. longa. No antimicrobial activity was observed by C. zeylanicum, at a concentration of 100 mg/mL and a zone of inhibition 10 mm at a concentration of 200 mg/mL, antibiotics activity of Fucidic acid (50 mg, 100 mg) against S. aureus and E. coli. Fucidic acid was showed effectiveness against S. aureus and E. coli with a zone of inhibition 15 and 17 mm at a concentration of 50 mg, respectively. While was zone of inhibition 17.4 and 19 mm at a concentration of 100 mg against S. aureus and E. coli, respectively. Extract of C. zeylanicum increased the effectiveness of Fucidic acid against E. coli (17 mm). As for the C. longa extract was the results with Fucidic acid on the bacteria (22 mm). C. zeylanicum and C. longa extracts and antibiotics, extract of Cinnamomum Zeylanicum increased the effectiveness each of Fucidic acid against S. aureus (18.6 mm). As for the C. longa extract was the results (when added to antibiotics) almost similar to C. zeylanicum extract, where it also has increased the impact of Fucidic acid on the bacteria S. aureus (20.4 mm).

Natural products are favored because of their non-toxicity, low irritants, and market reacceptance. We collected examples, according to ancient wisdom, of natural products to be applied in transdermal delivery. A transdermal delivery system, including different types of agents, such as ointments, patches, and gels, has long been used for skin concerns. In recent years, many novel transdermal applications, such as nanoemulsions, liposomes, lipid nanoparticles, and microneedles, have been reported. Nanosized drug delivery systems are widely applied in natural product deliveries. Nanosized materials notably enhance bioavailability and solubility, and are reported to improve the transdermal permeation of many substances compared with conventional topical formulations. Natural products have been made into nanosized biomaterials in order to enhance the penetration effect. Before introducing the novel transdermal applications of natural products, we present traditional methods within this article. The descriptions of novel transdermal applications are classified into three parts: liposomes, emulsions, and lipid nanoparticles. Each section describes cases that are related to promising natural product transdermal use. Finally, we summarize the outcomes of various studies on novel transdermal agents applied to skin treatments.
