Chemical composition and biological activities ofEruca vesicariasubsp. longirostrisessential oils

Abstract: Context To date, there are no reports to validate the Tunisian traditional and folklore claims of Eruca vesicaria (L) Cav. subsp. longirostris (Brassicaceae) for the treatment of disease. Objective Investigation of the chemical composition antimicrobial and antioxidant activity of essential oils from Eruca longirostris leaves, stems, roots and fruits. Materials and methods The essential oils of E. longirostris from leaves, stems, roots and fruits were obtained after 4 h of hydrodistillation. Chemical compositi… Show more

“…An oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC) assay was performed by the method previously described and the ORAC values were expressed as micromole of Trolox equivalents (TE) per gram of DW (µmol TE g −1 DW). The ABTS + radical scavenging activity was measured according to a method reported earlier . The values were expressed as micromole TE per 100 g of DW (µmol TE g −1 DW).…”

“…Benefits of essential oil stem from their reported medicinal uses as antioxidant, antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties (Eldahshan 2015;Salleh et al 2015;Eldahshan & Halim 2016;Omri Hichri et al 2016). Cinnamomum (Lauraceae) is a genus of evergreen shrubs and trees.…”

“…Food plays a significant role in reducing oxidative stress. Food antioxidants mitigate the development of cancer, diabetes mellitus, hypertension, inflammation, and obesity [10,21,25]. Gerger leaves regularly consumed raw by Saudi people and also worldwide can have health benefits owing to the antioxidant potential.…”

“…The methanol extract of gerger leaves was able to exhibit in-vivo antioxidant activity in rats [22], and the ethanolic extract improved the reproduction in male rats [23], also show in-vitro free radical scavenging activity [24]. The essential oil extracted from gerger leaves contain erucin, an isothiocyanate derivative shown to exhibit anticancer, antibacterial, and free radical scavenging activities [25,26]. Gerger leaves are also useful as anti-ulcer, astringent, antiphlogistic, diuretic, and laxative [16].…”
