Chemical composition, Antioxidant capacities and storage stability of Citrus macroptera and Garcinia pedunculata fruits

Abstract: An attempt was made to gain an insight about chemical compositions and antioxidant capacities of selected underutilized fruits Satkara (Citrus macroptera) and Taikor (Garcinia pedunculata) in Sylhet, Bangladesh. The analysis showed β Carotene and Vitamin C in Satkara 22±1.50 mg/100g and 210.43±0.40 mg/100g whereas Taikor contains 45±1.00 and 142.83±2.03 mg/100g respectively. The mineral composition of both fruits is appreciable. Total polyphenol content (TPC) and total flavonoids (TF) in Satkara and Taikor wer… Show more

“…It was reported by Nair et al [47] that high amount of potassium is helpful for the people taking diuretics to control hypertension and it also increases the utilization of iron. The recommended dietary allowance of sodium and potassium intake level per day for a healthy adult is not more than 2400 mg and 4700 mg respectively [39], while the recommended daily allowance value of magnesium is 400 mg per day for men of 19-30 years old and 310 mg per day for women of 19-39 years old [48]. Calcium has been reported to be effective in the building of skeletal structures, muscle functioning, while magnesium being a macro-element is important in the ionic balance and enzyme co-factors [49].…”

“…In Bangladesh, it is an underutilized fruit found in the north-eastern part of the country. The mature fruit is seldom used in cooking to impart sourness in curries and pulses (Islam et al, 2015), but it has many medicinal properties including antidiabetic, antiscorbutic, antidiarrhoeic, astringent, and cardiotonic (Vo et al, 2012;Sarma et al, 2016;Ali et al, 2017). To date, many studies have explored the pharmacological activity of G. pedunculata, but no attention has been paid to its allelopathic activity.…”

“…The fruit of G. pedunculata is commonly known as “Taikor” in Bangladesh and “Amlavetasa” in India [1]. The mature G. pedunculata fruit is greenish yellow and is consumed as a vegetable; it is also used as an ingredient in cooking different types of meat and chicken [2]. This fruit extract is reported to possess a variety of pharmacological benefits including antioxidant [3, 4], antimicrobial [5], anti-inflammatory [6], hepatoprotective [1], and cardioprotective properties [7].…”

“…Recently, the phytochemical composition of G. pedunculata was investigated and G. pedunculata was estimated to contain moisture 88.20%, protein 0.50%, β carotene 45.00 mg/100 g, vitamins (thiamine 0.03, riboflavin 0.02, and ascorbic acid 142.83 mg/100 g, resp. ), minerals (sodium 1.80, potassium 106.00, calcium 18.00, magnesium 23.00, iron 0.08, zinc 0.15, copper 0.12, and phosphorus 17.00 mg/100 g), phenolics (19.45 mg gallic acid/100 g), and flavonoids (18.33 mg rutin/g) [2]. The dried fruit rinds and pericarp of G. pedunculata have been reported to contain some benzophenones, pedenculol, hydroxy citric acid, garcinol, and cambogin [9], some of which are strong antioxidants.…”
