Chemical Composition of Two Different Lavender Essential Oils and Their Effect on Facial Skin Microbiota

Abstract: Lavender oil is one of the most valuable aromatherapy oils, its anti-bacterial and anti-fungal activities can be explained by main components such as linalool, linalyl acetate, lavandulol, geraniol, or eucalyptol. The aim of the study was to assess the anti-microbial effects of two different lavender oils on a mixed microbiota from facial skin. The commercial lavender oil and essential lavender oil from the Crimean Peninsula, whose chemical composition and activity are yet to be published, were used. Both oils… Show more

“…Among the metabolites with decreased levels, lavandulol has an antimicrobial effect on bacteria and a significant antioxidant effect on multifarious microorganisms (Arantes et al, 2016). The mechanism of action consists of disturbing the lipid structure of cell membranes, thereby leading to cell death (Bialon et al, 2019). Phenylacetylglycine is the metabolite of essential amino acid phenylalanine (Kristiansen et al, 2014).…”

“…Although the chemical compositions of lavender essential oil were studied by GC-MS in different literatures [4,5], there is no report on the separation and analysis of lavender essential oil by preparative gas chromatography (pGC), NMR and GC-MS equipped with three capillary columns of different polarities. This study could not only verify experimental results, but also the isolated monomer by pGC is of great help to the study of the activity of the single and composite component of lavender essential oil.…”

“…Regarding the linalool content, the oil obtained from the SBE500 variety is between the limits of the ISO standard. Usually, the quality criteria of lavender essential oil are based on the concentration of linalool and linalyl acetate, and these should be present in almost equal quantities [ 26 ]. Alpha and beta-pinene were in significant higher concentrations in the BBE500 variety compared to control.…”
