This review summarizes selected scientific evidence on phytochemistry and pharmacological properties of Ammodaucus leucotrichus. Information was gathered via the Internet (using Scopus, PubMed, Google Scholar, Elsevier, Springer, Science Direct, Researchgate and Web of Science) as well as from libraries and local books. Ammodaucus leucotrichus (A. leucotrichus), belongs to the family Apiaceae, has been reported to possess a wide range of traditional medicinal uses including in diarrhea, cough, pulmonary diseases, anorexia, allergy, tachycardia, helminthiasis, stomach pain, gastralgias, otitis, indigestion, cold, fever, anorexia and cardiac diseases. Phytochemical investigations revealed that this plant possesses many bioactive chemical constituents including monoterpenes and their derivatives, sesquiterpenes and their derivatives, tannins, anthracenes compounds, sterols, triterpenes, reducing compounds, alkaloids, phenol acids, saponins, flavonoids and coumarins. The most important pharmacological activities are antioxidant, antibacterial, antifungal, antidiabetic, anti-inflammatory, anticholinesterase and cytotoxicity activities. Ammodaucus leucotrichus has potential for the treatment of a wide range of diseases and has been well studied for its phytochemical properties. However, further scientific studies are needed to explore mechanisms of actions, adverse effects of the extracts, toxicity and the therapeutic effect of major secondary metabolites.

This work was conducted to study the chemical composition, antioxidant, antibacterial, and antifungal activities of essential oil and hydrolat from Withania frutescens. The essential oil was extracted by hydrodistillation. The chemical characterization was performed using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC/MS). The antioxidant activity was studied using four different assays (DPPH, TAC, FRAP, and β-carotene bleaching). The antibacterial activity test was carried out on multidrug-resistant bacteria including Gram-negative and Gram-positive strains. Antifungal activity was tested on Candida albicans and Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The yield of essential oil (EO) obtained by hydrodistillation of W. frutescens was 0.31% majorly composed of camphor, α-thujone, carvacrol, and thymol. Regarding the antioxidant activities, the concentration of the sample required to inhibit 50% of radicals (IC50) of EO and hydrolat were 14.031 ± 0.012 and 232.081 ± 3.047 µg/mL (DPPH), 4.618 ± 0.045 and 8.997 ± 0.147 µg/mL (FRAP), 0.091 ± 0.007 and 0.131 ± 0.004 mg AAE/mg (TAC), 74.141 ± 1.040% and 40.850 ± 0.083% (β-carotene), respectively. Concerning the antibacterial activity of essential oil and hydrolat, the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values found were 0.006 ± 0.001 and 6.125 ± 0.541 µg/mL (Escherichia coli 57), 0.003 ± 0.001 and 6.125 ± 0.068 µg/mL (Klebsiella pneumoniae), 0.001 ± 0.0 and 6.125 ± 0.046 µg/mL (Pseudomonas aeruginosa) and 0.012 ± 0.003 and 6.125 ± 0.571 µg/mL (Staphylococcus aureus), respectively. MIC values of essential oil and hydrolat vs. both C. albicans and S. cerevisiae were lower than 1/20,480 µg/mL. Based on the findings obtained, essential oils of Withania frutescens can be used as promising natural agents to fight free radical damage and nosocomial antibiotic-resistant microbes.

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengekstraksi, skrining fitokimia, dan analisa aktivitas mikroba dari daun bangun-bangun dengan menggunakan pelarut etil asetat 70% dan n-heksan. Metode ekstraksi menggunakan metode maserasi. Komposisi kimia senyawa aktif yang diuji terdiri dari alkaloid, flavonoid, terpenoid, tanin, dan saponin. Aktivtias antimikroba ekstrak etil asetat 70% dilakukan menggunakan metode pengukuran luas zona hambat. Bakteri uji yang digunakan terdiri dari E. Coli ATCC 25922 dan Pseudomonas aeruginos. Uji aktivitas bakteri dilakukan bersifat invitro. Pengukuran zona hambat menggunakan variasi konsentrasi ekstrak etil asetat 70% terdiri dari 0%, 15%, 30%, 45%, 60%, dan 75% (v/v). Hasil Penelitian :menunjukkan bahwa ekstrak etil asetat 70% daun Handeuleum secara kualitatif teridentifikasi memilki kandungan senyawa kimia alkaloid, Flavonoid, Terpenoid, Steroid, Tanin, dan Saponin. Aktivitas bakteri E. Coli ATCC 25922 dan Pseudomonas aeruginosa terhadap ekstrak didasarkan kepada pengukuran luas zona hambat yang terbentuk. Luas zona hambat yang terbentuk dari ekstrak etil asetat daun Handeuleum dengan range konsentrasi 0% s.d 75 % terdiri dari 9,50 mm – 21,2 mm dan 9,00 mm – 20,6 mm. This study aimed to extract, phytochemically screen, and analyze the microbial activity of bangun-bangun leaves using 70% ethyl acetate and n-hexane solvents. The extraction method used was maceration method. The chemical composition of the active compounds tested consisted of alkaloids, flavonoids, terpenoids, tannins, and saponins. The antimicrobial activity of 70% ethyl acetate extract was carried out using the method of measuring the inhibitory zone. The bacteria used consisted of E. coli ATCC 25922 and Pseudomonas aeruginos. The bacterial activity test was in vitro. Measurements of inhibitory zones using variations in the concentration of 70% ethyl acetate extract consisted of 0%, 15%, 30%, 45%, 60% and 75% (v / v). The results showed that 70% of the ethyl acetate extract of Handeuleum leaves were qualitatively identified as containing alkaloid chemical compounds, Flavonoids, Terpenoids, Steroids, Tanins, and Saponins. The activities of E. coli bacteria ATCC 25922 and Pseudomonas aeruginosa towards the extracts were based on measurements of the area of inhibition zone formed. The area of inhibition zone formed from the ethyl acetate extract of Handeuleum leaves were with a concentration range of 0% to 75% consisting of 9.50 mm - 21.2 mm and 9.00 mm - 20.6 mm.
