Chemical Constituents of Euphorbia sanctae-catharinae Fayed Essential Oil: a Comparative Study of Hydro-distillation and Microwave-Assisted Extraction

Abstract: Objective: Microwave-assisted extraction (MAE), as an effective tool for the extraction of essential oil from medicinal and aromatic plants, has gained a great attention over the last years, thus in this study, MAE was performed to extract essential oils from aerial part of Euphorbia sanctae-catharinae. Methods: microwave-assisted extraction (MAE), as well as hydro-distillation (HD) techniques was used for oil preparation. Oil composition was studied by gas chromatographymass spectrometry analysis. Results: Es… Show more

“…The EOs of T. polium were extracted using hydrodistillation (HD) and microwave-assisted extraction (MAE) methods and produced 0.045% and 0.061% ( v/w ) of yellow oils, respectively. The variation of the oil yield might be attributed to the extraction method used [ 32 ]. The extracted EOs were analyzed by Gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS) and the chemical constituents were identified and described in Table 1 .…”

“…On the other hand, the EOs extracted from T. decussatus by HD and MAE were colorless or faint yellow with a yield of 0.023% and 0.031% ( v / w ), respectively. This variation could also be ascribed to the method of extraction used [ 32 ]. Significant variations of the chemical compositions and antimicrobial activities were described among the extracted EOs of Artemisia argyi by HD, simultaneous distillation, and subcritical extraction techniques [ 46 ].…”

“…E. caracasana ) and E. fischeriana , and from 0.08% to 0.84% ( w / w ) in E. pilosa and E. densa . Microwave-assisted extraction (MAE) was reported only once (3%) with faster extraction time (3:1) and higher oil yield (1.2% vs. 0.7% w / v ) than conventional techniques (MAE vs. HD) [74]. Qualitative and quantitative analyses were performed by gas chromatography (GC) or GC coupled to mass spectrometry (GC-MS).…”

“…Many chemical constituents were isolated from these plants viz diterpenoids, sesquiterpenes, iridoids, flavonoids aglycones, and glycosides (Cespedes et al 2015;Singh and Singh 2016). The chemical constitutes of Euphorbia species exhibited many activities as antibacterial, anti-inflammation, and antioxidant (Reda et al 2017). Peris and Kiptoo (2017) and Alghamdi (2018) stated that the botanical pesticides can be used in control of aphids, as they are environmentally safe, having low toxicity to mammals, fish, and pollinators.…”
