Chemical Constituents of Propolis from Vietnamese Trigona minor and Their Antiausterity Activity against the PANC-1 Human Pancreatic Cancer Cell Line

Abstract: The ethanol extract of propolis from the Vietnamese stingless bee Trigona minor possessed potent preferential cytotoxicity against PANC-1 human pancreatic cancer cells in nutrient-deprived medium, with a PC value of 14.0 μg/mL. Chemical investigation of this extract led to the isolation of 15 cycloartane-type triterpenoids, including five new compounds (1-5), and a lanostane-type triterpenoid. The structures of the new compounds were elucidated on the basis of NMR spectroscopic analysis. Among the isolated com… Show more

Vietnam is leading the numbers of compounds isolated from SBP, with 34 compounds, followed by Brazil (29 compounds) and Thailand (19 compounds).…”

“…Cinnamoyloxy-mammeisin present in this Brazilian SBP exhibited anti-inflammatory and antibacterial activities ( Table 2 ) [ 182 , 183 ]. Similarly to honey bees in Brazil [ 79 ], Myanmar [ 93 ], and Thailand [ 148 ], stingless bees in Indonesia [ 160 ] and Vietnam [ 146 ] also collect resin from Mangifera indica to produce propolis containing mainly cycloartane-type triterpenes.…”

“…The propolis of Tetrigona laeviceps and Tetrigona melanoleuca in Thailand contains a prenylated xanthone, α-mangostin, and dipterocarpol, a dammarane triterpene [17]. The propolis of a Vietnamese stingless bee, Trigona timor , contains cycloartane-type triterpenes [18].…”

“…The cypress is the major plant source of Maltese propolis, and Populus bud exudates are the main sources of the propolis of Bologna, Italy, and Algeria. The resin of Macaranga tanarius L. and Mangifera indica L. is the source of propolis from Japan, Myanmar, and Vietnam [18,20]. Garcinia mangostana is the primary source of propolis from Thailand [17].…”

“…Furthermore, a dichloromethane extract of SBP displayed cytotoxic effects on head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) cell lines, resulting in reduced viability of these cells [ 94 ]. Novel compounds, 27-hydroxyisomangiferolic acid and 23-hydroxyisomangiferolic acid B, in the SBP extract displayed the highest levels of cytotoxicity against pancreatic cancer cells [ 95 ]. Further cytotoxic effects of SBP against canine osteosarcoma cells have been reported, with modulated cell morphologies and reduced viability of the cancer cells observed [ 109 ].…”
