Chemical Degradation of Poly(Ethylene Terephthalate)

Abstract: The possibility of converting polyethylene terephthalate (PET) waste into terephthalic acid as a primary material by using different techniques through trans-esterification, with an alcohol and through hydrolysis in basic medium, has been investigated. In addition, utilization of activating agents such as inorganic salts and phase transfer catalysts has been investigated. Mineral water and beverage bottles were collected, cleaned and crushed into flakes suitable for the intended experiments. Also, the main pro… Show more

“…Catalytic [8,9] and supercritical [10e13] methanolysis produce DMT and EG. Catalytic [14], neutral, alkaline and acidic [15e18], and supercritical [19] hydrolysis produce TPA and EG. Glycolysis has significant advantages over methanolysis or hydrolysis, primarily because BHET can be used as a raw material for either DMT-based or TPA-based PET production units, while DMT and TPA cannot be used interchangeably.…”

“…Vários estudos [ 1,2,[4][5][6][7] sobre o processo de despolimerização do PET via hidrólise alcalina tem sido realizados. Entretanto, as metodologias atualmente encontradas na literatura para esta reação são dispendiosas, uma vez que problemas como a penetração de reagentes químicos no interior da matriz de polímero, devido a sua resistência a tais reagentes, e a difícil solubilização dos resíduos de plástico comprometem o rendimento da reação de despolimerização [7] .…”

“…Depolymerization of PET usually gives terephthalic acid (TPA), dimethyl terephthalate, and ethylene glycol. Scientists around the world are trying to develop a quick and efficient method to recycle=degrade PET [7][8][9][10][11][12]. Accordingly, performance of various catalysts [13], different solvent systems [14,15], and chemicals [1,9,12,16] has been tested to evaluate their ability to degrade PET.…”
