Pesticides are pollutants found in wastewater due to increasing agricultural activities over the years. Inappropriate dosing of pesticides results in the dispersal of active ingredients in the environment. The complete removal of pesticides from wastewater is an immediate concern due to their high toxicity and mobility. At present, adsorption is one of the most widely used methods for pesticide removal, in which synthetic zeolites and mesoporous silica materials are extensively applied. This article presents a systematic and comparative review of the applications and comparison of these adsorbents, based on the data reported in the literature. The paper summarizes the information collected from various studies, including the type of adsorbents and pesticides used, experimental conditions, and results of each work. The studies analyzed were laboratory-based and show potential advantages for the treatment of pesticide-bearing waters using functionalized and unfunctionalized synthetic zeolites and mesoporous silica materials. As a whole, functionalized materials are reported to exhibit better removal performance for different pesticides than conventional materials. It is expected that the results of this review will help researchers to establish a powerful strategy for the abatement of pesticides in wastewater.

Rata-rata bahan baku kaolin di Indonesia masih mempunyai derajat keputihan yang rendah padahal kaolin harus mempunyai derajat keputihan yang tinggi (83%) untuk dapat digunakan sebagai pelapis dalam industri kertas. Untuk meningkatkan derajat keputihan dari bahan baku kaolin tersebut, proses pemutihan perlu dilakukan. Proses pemutihan kaolin telah banyak dilakukan oleh beberapa peneliti dengan menggunakan pemutih yang berbeda-beda. Warna kuning kecokelatan pada kaolin yang menurunkan derajat keputihan kaolin disebabkan oleh kandungan besi (III) oksida dalam kaolin. Pada proses pemutihan, terjadi reduksi besi (III) oksida menjadi besi (II) oksida yang lebih mudah larut dalam air sehingga lebih mudah dipisahkan dari padatan kaolin. Pada penelitian ini, pemutihan kaolin menggunakan Na2S2O4 dan EDTA sebagai pemutih. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk melihat pengaruh variabel operasi yaitu pH dan temperatur terhadap derajat keputihan kaolin pada proses pemutihan menggunakan kedua pemutih tersebut. Hasil percobaan menunjukkan proses pemutihan menggunakan Na2S2O4 dan EDTA dapat meningkatkan derajat keputihan kaolin sehingga memenuhi spesifikasi untuk pelapis kertas pada beberapa kondisi operasi. Proses pemutihan berhasil meningkatkan derajat keputihan kaolin hingga mencapai 85,54% pada pH 12 dan temperatur 70oC.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are principally derived from the incomplete combustion of fossil fuels. This study investigated the occurrence of PAHs in aquatic environments around the world, their effects on the environment and humans, and methods for their removal. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons have a great negative impact on the environment and humans, and can even cause cancer in humans. Use of good methods and equipment are essential to monitoring PAHs, and GC/MS and HPLC are usually used for their analysis in aqueous solutions. In aquatic environments, the PAHs concentrations range widely from 0.03 ng/L (seawater; Southeastern Japan Sea, Japan) to 8,310,000 ng/L (Domestic Wastewater Treatment Plant, Siloam, South Africa). Moreover, bioaccumulation of ∑16PAHs in fish has been reported to range from 11.2 ng/L (Cynoscion guatucupa, South Africa) to 4207.5 ng/L (Saurida undosquamis, Egypt). Several physical/chemical and biological techniques have been reported to treat water contaminated by PAHs, but adsorption and combined treatment methods have shown better removal performance, with some methods removing up to 99.99% of PAHs.
