Chemical Profile and Bioactivity Evaluation of Salvia Species from Eastern Europe

Abstract: The Salvia genus comprises about 1000 species endowed with medicinal, aromatic, cosmetic, and ornamental applications. Even though the genus is one of the most-studied taxa of the Lamiaceae family, data on the chemical composition and biological properties of certain locally used Salvia species are still scarce. The present work aimed to evaluate the phytochemical profile and antimicrobial, antioxidant, and cytotoxic potential of ten Salvia species that grow in Eastern Europe (e.g., the Republic of Moldova). L… Show more

“…The antioxidant activity was investigated by the DPPH radical scavenging method. ,, First, HYP E solutions were prepared at 0.2, 0.1, 0.05, and 0.025 wt % in 80% ethanol solution. Then, 50 μL of each solution was added to 2.95 mL of DPPH solution in methanol ( A 517 nm = 1.0 ± 0.5) and shaken vigorously.…”

“…In addition, S. officinalis dropped the elevated levels of ALT and AST in the serum. The azathioprine-induced oxidative stress was relieved through MDA reduction and counteracting the inhibitory effect of azathioprine on glutathione, catalase and superoxide dismutase activity [136].…”

“…S. miltiorrhiza and other Salvia species have been shown to inhibit acute liver injury induced by D-galactosamine, protect against CCl4-induced acute and chronic liver injury and fibrosis, and protect against hepatic fibrosis and apoptosis induced by biliary obstruction in rats [136].…”

“…Several biological activities have been reported for sage extracts, such as antibacterial, anticancer, anticholinesterase, antinociceptive, hypoglycemic, hypolipidemic, liver-protective, antioxidant, etc. (Figure 1) [8][9][10][11][12]. Recently, the anti-radical activity of S. officinalis L. against uranium toxicity, with uranium being a highly radioactive toxic heavy metal, has been suggested [13].…”
