Chemical synthesis of oriented ferromagnetic LaSr-2 × 4 manganese oxide molecular sieve nanowires

Abstract: We report a chemical solution based method using nanoporous track-etched polymer templates for producing long and oriented LaSr-2 × 4 manganese oxide molecular sieve nanowires. Scanning transmission electron microscopy and electron energy loss spectroscopy analyses show that the nanowires are ferromagnetic at room temperature, single crystalline, epitaxially grown and self-aligned.

“…10,11 However, complex oxides such as Ce 1Àx Gd x O 2Ày , La 0.7 Sr 0.3 MnO 3 or BaZrO 3 have recently attracted a great interest due to their singular functional properties, small dimensions and high-throughput achieved. “…[46][47][48][49] Nanostructures from oxides such as Ce 1Àx Gd x O 2Ày , Pb(Zr x Ti 1Àx )O 3 and La 0.7 Sr 0.3 MnO 3 have also been grown by CSD and CTA. 11,12,14,15,[50][51][52] However, the use of RTA will likely provide a better understanding of the nucleation and coarsening mechanisms involved, particularly for complex oxide systems where two or more cations are present which could derive in the nucleation of different phases.…”

“…Since many functional properties rely on epitaxial order and crystal orientation (e.g., piezoelectric and high-T C superconducting properties), growth methods that are able to provide ordered arrays of epitaxial nanostructures are highly interesting. Several recent studies in our group have grown epitaxial single crystalline functional oxide nanostructures on single crystal substrates [3][4][5]. However, these nanostructures were generated with no precise position control.…”

“…Among the experimental techniques available for characterization of nanostructured materials, aberration corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM), in combination with electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS), is a powerful technique for structural and chemical analysis down to the atomic scale. Energy-loss magnetic circular dichroism (EMCD) can be measured in a TEM studying the L 2,3 EELS absorption edges of transition metal, which has already been used to study nanostructured materials in the subnanometer range (Schattschneider et al, 2008;Zhang et al, 2009Zhang et al, , 2011Lidbaum et al, 2010;Carretero-Genevrier et al, 2012;Salafranca et al, 2012). Furthermore, as has recently been demonstrated by Schattschneider et al (2006) electron probes can also be used to study the magnetic properties.…”
