Chemical Warfare Agents Analyzer Based on Low Cost, Room Temperature, and Infrared Microbolometer Smart Sensors

Abstract: Advanced IR emitters and sensors are under development for high detection probability, low false alarm rate, and identification capability of toxic gases. One of the most reliable techniques to identify the gas species is absorption spectroscopy, especially in the medium infrared spectral range, where most of existing toxic compounds exhibit their strongest rotovibrational absorption bands. Following the results obtained from simulations and analysis of expected absorption spectra, a compact nondispersive infr… Show more

“…These devices are intended to offer a portable and low-power solution for real-time detection of small molecule chemical threats in indoor and outdoor environments. Past efforts to detect such threats have applied a variety of techniques, including Raman and IR spectroscopy [ 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 ], gas or liquid chromatography coupled with mass spectroscopy [ 6 , 7 , 8 , 9 ], classic wet chemical assays [ 10 , 11 ], and others. For many of these methods, samples are collected at the point of interest and sent to central laboratories for processing.…”

“…These applications have penetrated the industrial, military, and consumer markets, showing their diversity and the extensive marketing opportunities they present. Examples include the likes of on-chip sensors for diagnostics (Sisto et al, 2010;Zhang et al, 2009), chemical detection (Corsi et al, 2012;Barritault et al, 2013), thermal conductivity sensors (heat flow sensors and micro-hotplates) (Senesac et al, 2009;Arndt, 2002;Elmi et al, 2008), air flow sensors (Baltes et al, 1998;Johnson and Higashi, 1987;Simon et al, 2001), and thermal imaging microbolometers (Akula et al, 2011;Dulski et al, 2013;Castaldo et al, 1996;Liddiard, 2013).…”
