“…Kazakov et al . (59) published a paper entitled ‘Self‐oscillatory chemiluminescence’ that reported oscillatory CL behavior in an SO 3 Cr 2 O 7 2− UO 2 2+ H 2 SO 4 system. CL was caused by the oxidation of sulfur by ozone and dichromate ion.…”

“…We proposed the mechanism in light of the oxidation by oxochromium VI compounds, [32] the oxidation of thioureas [33] and the evolution of SO 2 (Scheme 4). Other factors were considered; (a) the rapid evolution of SO 2 gas which indicated that the oxidation of sulfur was an earlier step; (b) absence of any traces of elemental sulfur which revealed that oxidation of sulfur has occurred while it was linked to some intermediate; therefore, we ignored that sulfur was separated, in the elemental form, then has oxidized [34] ; (c) sulfur functions are capable to behave free radical reactions [33] ; and (d) the transition metal ions induce free radical reactions. [32] Thus, it was proposed that the reaction started by the attack of the lone pair of electrons, in the C S, at the chromium ions [35] ; the originated chromate anion, in turn, attacked the electron deficient sulfur affording the intermediate [ [36] resulted in splitting of the four-membered ring, providing the analogous 2,4-diones 4 and 5, along with the sulfone intermediate [XI] which gave SO 2 gas via a dehydrogenative single electron cyclization, followed by hydrolysis, then, oxidative degradation step !…”
