ChemInform Abstract: CdBiO2Cl: Synthesis and Powder Structure Solution.

Abstract: structure structure (solids and liquids) D 2000 -005CdBiO 2 Cl: Synthesis and Powder Structure Solution.-The title compound is prepared by reaction of BiOCl and CdO at 973 K (air, 1 h). CdBiO 2 Cl crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P2 1 /m with Z = 2. The structure consists of [CdBiO 2 + ] metal-oxygen layers alternating with [Cl − ] layers along the c-axis. The layers are held together by strong Cd-Cl bonds.-(KIRIK, SERGEI D.; YAKOVLEVA, EKATERINA G.; SHIMANSKII, ALEKSANDR F.; KOVALEV, YURII G.; Acta … Show more

“…The particular crystal chemistry of Bi 3+ lone pair ions leads to unusual physical and chemical properties such as luminescence, 1 selective oxidation catalysts, 2,3 or multiferroic properties. 4 The combination between Bi 2 O 3 and most voluminous anions (Cl − , Br − , I − ) or oxo-anions (IO 3− , 5 , 6 CO 3 2−7 ) often leads to two-dimensional (2D) structural types related to the parent Sillen phases in which layered fluorite-like [BiO] + units host intercalated anions, 8,9 as shown in Figure 1a. These units are stabilized due to the ability of Bi 3+ ions to form elementary oxo-centered tetrahedra OBi 4 or oxygen-deficient O(Bi,□) 4 groups, where □ defines vacancies.…”

“…For instance, [Bi 1−x Co x O] 2 (SO 4 ) 1−x , where 0.14 ≤ x ≤ 0.18, 20 adopts a Silleń-X1 phase. 8,9 More intriguing cases involve pleated oxocentered layers found in both [Bi 2 CoO 3 ](SO 4 ) 6 (Figure 1e) and [Bi 13.33 Cu 2 O 16 ](SO 4 ) 6 21 with segregation of the transition metals within the layers. However, in both cases, the examination of reported crystal structures highlights strong SO 4 disorder.…”
