Chemometric Characterization of Sunflower Seeds

Abstract: The spectroscopic characterization of different varieties of sunflower seeds based on their oleic acid content is proposed. One hundred fifty samples of sunflower seeds from different places of Argentina were analyzed by near-infrared diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (NIRDRS). Seed samples were grounded and sieved without chemical treatment previous to the analysis. For the characterization, the used multivariate methods were: principal component analysis (PCA), cluster analysis (CA), linear discriminant analy… Show more

“…1 Nowadays, the formulation which is known as ''Vitamin E'' includes α, β, δ and γ-tocopherols and the corresponding tocoterienols (Fig 1). 2,3 Vitamin E is a mixture of fat-soluble compounds with antioxidant properties which shows promise in preventing and curing Alzheimer's disease, cancer 4,5 and cardiovascular disease. 6,7 It also has a role in protecting cells from oxidative stress through donating electrons to free radicals to neutralise them.…”

“…Multivariate statistical techniques are used to provide the classification information and detect cause‐effect relationships (Masino and others ). Principal component analysis (PCA) and hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA) have been used to demonstrate the similarities and differences between the quality parameters of food materials (Asensio and others ; Monferrere and others ; Saavedra and others ). However, the application of multivariate approach to determine the preservative effects of natural and synthetic food additives has not been attempted in a great deal.…”

“…A PLS-DA foi o método que obteve a melhor capacidade de análise gráfica e discriminante, devido à sua capacidade de reconhecer os três grupos separados. O método NIRDRS-PLS tem a vantagem de não requerer análise cromatográfica para gerar a matriz de concentrações, obtendo assim o espectro de infravermelho que pode resultar na classificação rápida e econômica de variedades de sementes de girassol (Monferrere et al, 2012).…”
